Biography:
Author of From Head to Hand: Art and the Manual (2010); Between the Eyes: Essays on Photography and Politics (2003); The Fighting Is a Dance, Too: Leon Golub & Nancy Spero (2000); Between Dog & Wolf: Essays on Art and Politics (1999 and 2010, second edition with a new prolegomenon by Hakim Bey); Broken Wings: The Legacy of Landmines (1998); and a book of poems, Manoeuvres (1980). Essays and reviews appear regularly in Artforum and Aperture. Exhibition catalogues and monographs on the work of numerous artists, including Martin Puryear, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Carolee Schneemann, Alfredo Jaar, Miguel Rio Branco, Mike Bidlo, Francesca Woodman, Raoul Hague and Robert Frank, Tim Davis, Daniel Martinez, Ron Gorchov, Terry Winters, Chris Martin, and Leon Golub. Studied poetics at New College, San Francisco, with Robert Duncan, Diane di Prima, Michael Palmer, Duncan McNaughton, and David Meltzer. Founding editor of ACTS: A Journal of New Writing (1982 90); editor of A Book of Correspondences for Jack Spicer (1987). Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in writing (2003 04); Infinity Award for Writing from the International Center of Photography (2007). Chair, M.F.A.
