Biographical/Historical note

Maria Lind is a curator and critic born in 1966 and based Stockholm. Lind studied art history, Russian, the history of ideas, semiotics, and feminist theory at the University of Stockholm, and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program from 1995-1996. From 1994-1998 she was a member of the editorial board of the Nordic art review Index Magazine. In 1997 she became a curator at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, during which time she was selected to co-curate the Manifesta 2 exhibition alongside Robert Fleck and Barbara Vanderlinden. This iteration of the Manifesta exhibition, the nomadic European Biennial which takes place in a different city each time, was held at the Casino Luxembourg June 28-October 11, 1998. It was comprised of primarily site-specific works by 47 artists from 30 different countries. Manifesta’s approach has been consistent in its consideration of contemporary art in response to political and social developments throughout Europe, coupled with the effort to equally represent artists from across the continent.

In 1998 and 2001 she was curator of Sweden’s participation in the São Paulo Biennial. In addition, she curated a number of independent projects such as “Sawn-Off” (1996), “Clean & Sane” (1997), and “Personal & Ritual” (1998). In addition to her curatorial work, she has written extensively in publications beyond her exhibition catalogs, such as Artforum, Bidoun, frieze, Art Monthly, Trans, Parkett, Flash Art, and the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. In 2002 she became director of the Kunstverein München, and in 2005 she became director of IASPIS (International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm). From 2008 to 2010 she was the director of the graduate program at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. In 2009 she was the recipient of the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement. In 2011 Lind was appointed director of the Tensta Konsthall where she regularly curates exhibitions. She will serve as the artistic director for the 2016 Gwangju Biennial.

Scope and Contents note

Series I: This series contains material related to Maria Lind’s work as a curator of the Manifesta 2 exhibition.

Subseries IA: Correspondence—General: This subseries contains letters and faxes related to the exhibition Manifesta 2, arranged chronologically. Within that order, the material is separated by folder to maintain Lind’s previous arrangement of it. Lind had separated these correspondences in five different containers, within which material was arranged chronologically.

The first container held material relating to Lind’s travels through Europe to research for the Manifesta 2 exhibition; these are the earliest correspondences, and are placed in the folders 1-4.

Lind’s second container was labeled “Manifesta Correspondence” and contained letters or faxes sent directly to her; these files are now called “TO Maria Lind”, and primarily hold letters and faxes from artists and their representatives that Lind considered including in the exhibition.

Lind’s third container was labeled “Luxembourg IN”, to denote correspondences that were received at the Manifesta 2 offices at its headquarters in Luxembourg and forwarded to Lind; this material includes correspondence to and between the Manifesta 2 curators and executives, which include coordinator Enrico Lungi, administrator Jo Cox, project manager Ulrike Groos, international relations manager Annette Mullink, and head of the press office Laure Faber. These are held in files marked “General Correspondence”.

Lind’s fourth container was labeled “Luxembourg OUT”, to denote correspondence from Lind sent through the Luxembourg office; because communication was primarily sent by fax machine, Lind was able to save the original drafts of her correspondences. These correspondences are held in files marked “FROM Maria Lind”.

Lind’s fifth container was labeled “Curator Correspondence” and contained communications sent directly between Lind and the other curators, Robert Fleck and Barbara Vanderlinden, and are now held in files marked either “To Lind from Robert Fleck and Barbara Vanderlinden” or “FROM Lind to Fleck and Vanderlinden”. Correspondence in this subseries is primarily written in English, as well as Swedish, French, and German.

Subseries IB: Correspondence—Artists: This subseries contains materials related to the 30 of the 47 artists selected to participate in the Manifesta 2 exhibition. The material is separated by artist and arranged alphabetically; files primarily contain letters, faxes, and emails from the artists discussing preliminary plans for their artworks. In addition, there is some documentation about the artists, such as press clippings, contact information, and biographies.

Subseries IC: Curators’ Newsletter: This subseries contains documents called “Curators’ Newsletter”, which were sent periodically to all who were involved in the planning of the exhibition. The newsletters include updates from the curators about their international visits and their visions of the exhibition, as well as administrative reports about the general progress of the exhibition. The material includes the published newsletters as well as Lind’s drafts, and each group is arranged chronologically.

Subseries ID: Research—Cities: This subseries contains material collected by Lind while visiting cities throughout Europe in preparation for the Manifesta 2 exhibition. Lind and the other curators began these travels in the summer of 1997, and visited galleries, museums and artists’ studios. This subseries contains information about the cities, such as maps, brochures, postcards, and tourist information; information from galleries, art events, and museums; artists’ contact information and résumés; and some correspondence regarding the planning of these visits. Each folder contains material about one city, and folders are arranged alphabetically.

Subseries IE: Research—Artists: This subseries contains material connected to over 200 artists whom were considered for inclusion in the Manifesta 2 exhibition. Each file contains information related to one artist, and files are arranged alphabetically. The material includes artists’ CV’s and examples of their work, press clippings, gallery information, publications, posters, videos, CD’s and audiocassettes, and some correspondence.

Subseries IF: Catalogue: This subseries contains material related to the development of the Manifesta 2 catalogue. In addition to material related to the development and planning of the catalogue, there are drafts of the texts included in the catalogue. These texts reflect on the artistic climate of each country from which works were included in the exhibition, and filed by the name of that country and arranged alphabetically.

Subseries IG: Planning, Press, and Administrative Files: This subseries contains material related to the planning and administration of Manifesta 2, as well as some press clippings in response to the exhibition. It includes travel information, itineraries, and budgets for the curators’ international visits; exhibition budgets, receipts, and contracts; floor plans of the Casino Luxembourg, the venue for the exhibition; information on interns; material about the selected artists’ visit to Luxembourg; mailing lists and press releases; lists of contacts established during the international visits, as well as travel reports from the curators; and press clippings and reviews of the exhibition.

Subseries IH: Manifesta 1: This subseries contains Lind’s material from the first Manifesta exhibition, which was held in Rotterdam in 1996. Included are the exhibition press kit, as well as artworks, posters, and brochures related to various events and installations that were held as part of the exhibition; information about and publications by the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam, one of the exhibition’s venues; and some other publications from other institutions in Rotterdam.

Series II: Other Curatorial Projects and Writings: This series contains material related to some of Lind’s other curatorial projects from 1994 to 1998, the period previous to and during her involvement in the Manifesta 2 exhibition; in addition, it includes some of her published writings, material related to her editorial work at Index magazine, and a number of files of research not associated with any identifiable project or writing.

Subseries IIA: Other Curatorial Projects 1994-1998: This subseries contains material connected to some of Lind’s other curatorial projects, which include exhibitions and symposiums, and to her position as curator at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Material is separated by the name of the project or venue, and arranged more or less chronologically; it includes correspondence, press clippings, slides, administrative material, and exhibition material.

Subseries IIB: Writings, Publications, and Editorial Work: This subseries contains material related to Lind’s editorial work at Index magazine and her own published writings from between 1992 and 1997. Included are articles written by Lind for the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet between 1994 and 1997; these are separated by year and arranged chronologically; all are written in Swedish. In addition, there are a number of Lind’s writings printed in other publications between 1992 and 1997, which are also in Swedish.

Subseries IIC: Research—General: This subseries contains Lind’s research material not connected to any identifiable project. It includes material from various exhibitions Lind attended, newspaper clippings, publications, photocopies from books, a number of writings by curator Friedemann Malsch, and Lind’s handwritten notes. Research topics include hysteria, and the artists Sigrid Hjerten, Birgit Stahl-Nyberg, and M. Louise Stanley. This material is primarily in Swedish and English.

Subseries IID: Curatorial Proposals from Others: This subseries contains material related to two curatorial project proposals from other curators. The first is a proposal for the 10th Biennial of Sydney: Jurassic Technologies Revenant in 1996; the second is for an exhibition called "Scream and Scream Again: Film in Art" in 1996.

Series III: Education and Biographical Material: This series contains Lind’s biographical information and material from her enrollment at the University of Stockholm from 1990-1996 and her participation as a student at the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1995. In addition there is material related to classes taught by Lind at the University of Stockholm and elsewhere.

Subseries IIIA: Graduate School / University of Stockholm and Whitney ISP: This subseries, about graduate school, University of Stockholm and Whitney I.S.P., includes drafts of a thesis and another research paper, documents regarding her appointment as a research fellow, and information about and records from the Whitney Independent Study Program.
