Position Description

Description: The Sustainability Institute at The College of New Jersey seeks a motivated individual to join our team working as a Resiliency Manager with the NJ Resiliency Network. The NJ Resiliency Network works with public, non-profit and academic partners across the state to provide municipalities with the tools and resources to become stronger, more resilient communities. (See www.NJResiliency.com.) The Sustainability Institute is a “think and do” tank that works to advance understanding and implementation of best practices that will lead to sustainable development.

The successful Resiliency Manager candidate is a skilled planner and/or project manager who will assist local governments with resilience, coastal hazard, and adaptation policy and planning in New Jersey’s central coastal region. The Resiliency Manager will inventory municipal needs for resiliency, provide direct technical assistance and connect municipalities to a “network” of public and private support and technical assistance. In addition to coordinating municipal needs with resources, the Resiliency Manager will report regularly on municipal progress towards resilience, as well as gaps in available tools and resources. This feedback will inform the work of state, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and federal entities in policy development and research. The impact of this position will be to accelerate the development and deployment of the next generation of best practices for resiliency to climate change.

The position will require extensive travel throughout New Jersey’s central coastal region (mileage reimbursement provided). As such, candidates must have reliable transportation.

Responsibilities:

*Develop and conduct municipal outreach on climate-impact related issues in coastal New Jersey.

Description: The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission serves as a forum for interstate communication and coordination on water related pollution control efforts among all the New England States and New York State. New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are members of the Interstate Environmental Commission’s (IEC) compact. IEC’s compact was created in 1936 and established IEC as an organization responsible for protecting the waters and environment of its jurisdictional area.

In May 2012, NEIWPCC entered into an agreement with the IEC District to assist their three compact members (NY, NJ, and CT) in meeting their most pressing water resource, quality, and wastewater treatment concerns, both within and across state boundaries, by conducting monitoring, workshops, seminars, and the transfer of technology. NEIWPCC is working with the IEC District in meeting their diverse needs by providing fiduciary responsibility, staff and technical assistance, analysis and support for a broad array of water resource areas.

Responsibilities: Work independently to complete regularly scheduled field work including facility inspections and ambient water quality monitoring projects. Work with other staff to prepare individual project/program element work plans and budgets, approves payments under those projects, and pursues potential new sources of funding for projects. Assist Senior Manager and Associate Director with various program issues, grants and contracts, and develops information on which program decisions are based. Assist in the preparation and review of grant applications for new projects, contracts, and final project reports.

Activities are generally water quality and water supply oriented, but can cover a wide range of environmental issues, according to program needs and the incumbent’s areas of expertise. Act as technical advisor for the Commission, state agency staff, and public on those program issues; serve as staff support, clearinghouse for information, and meeting chairman for state agency staff workgroups for those issues. Responsibilities: The Adirondack Conservation Intern is responsible for assisting staff in the areas of conservation science, threat abatement, communications and marketing, fee land and conservation easement stewardship, and fundraising, and for completing a nature preserve management and stewardship lead project as follows:

Lead Project – Nature Preserve Management and Stewardship:  The intern will work to transform one of the Adirondack Chapter’s nature preserves into a community resource that will provide opportunities for local residents and visitors to get outside and explore nature. Working under the supervision of the Stewardship Programs Manager, the intern will engage in management, planning, communications and outreach in order to implement the management plan for this flagship preserve.   (~12-19 weeks)

Preserve management and planning responsibilities may include:

Coordinate partner, volunteer, and community involvement.

Carry out trail work and trail design, including visitor parking area.

Improve signage to enhance visitor experience.

Revise and provide feedback on preserve management plan.

Communication and education/outreach responsibilities may include:

Serve as a community ambassador.

Work in close partnership with town officials.

Assist with developing and writing interpretation/education materials and identifying communication platforms.

Engage public, partners, and supporters of The Nature Conservancy.

Threat Abatement: Assist the Terrestrial and Aquatic Invasive Species Project Coordinators with control and monitoring of invasives at our preserves and at ecologically critical sites in the Adirondack Park, including NYS Forest Preserve, and NYS Dept. of Transportation rights-of-way; assist with public outreach and education. (~2-3 weeks)

Fundraising:  Assist Philanthropy staff with all aspects of fundraising trips and special events, including logistics, donor relations, and producing informational materials.  Assist with one or more field trips, and with the Annual Membership Meeting logistics. (~1-2 weeks)

Other Stewardship: Assist Stewardship staff with various aspects of nature preserve and conservation easement stewardship activities. Tasks might include: boundary marking and maintenance work at our nature preserves and conservation easement properties throughout the Adirondack Park, inventorying and organizing large maps and other conservation easement recordkeeping, and assisting landowners with invasive plant eradication. (~1-3 weeks)

Debrief: Maintain a journal documenting your experiences as an intern, and debrief with staff at the end of the internship

General: In addition to the listed duties, there might be clerical and other work as needed to support conservation priorities or special projects that can benefit from the intern’s skills and interests. Work will be both in the office and in the field.  The intern will work closely with many members of the staff, and will report to the Director of Communications.  The intern is expected to work independently as well as with colleagues, members and donors, volunteers, partners and the public.  Field work will be in all sorts of weather, sometimes in remote locations with rugged terrain.

    • The Project Director will provide monthly written reports to the AOA-SC which will be reviewed on the monthly call by the AOA-SC.

Qualifications:

This includes leading the national portion of the National Wildlife Federation’s campaigns to secure authorization and federal funding for restoring Coastal Louisiana and to direct funds from the BP oil spill to the restoration of coastal areas Gulf-wide. This position will also work, to a lesser extent, on the broader goals of Everglades restoration as it relates to the Gulf of Mexico. The Senior Policy Specialist will work in concert with NWF’s team in Louisiana, with the Gulf Team in the other Gulf states, with NWF’s partner organizations in both campaigns and with NWF’s national restoration team. This position will be NWF’s key voice advocating to the federal government and members of Congress on behalf of NWF’s Gulf restoration and MRD priorities, and in particular for the use of all post-BP oil spill funds to advance those priorities.

Responsibilities: In this role you will:

Advocate for NWF’s and MRD campaign priorities to Congress and the Administration. This includes campaign’s priorities with Congress and the Administration on RESTORE implementation and authorizations through WRDA and appropriations. Work includes policy analysis, materials production, and participation in relevant meetings.

Advocate for NWF’s Gulf restoration priorities, particularly regarding the use of post-BP oil-spill funds, to Congress and the Administration. Work with the Gulf Restoration Director to identify NWF’s restoration priorities. Work includes policy analysis, materials production, and participation in relevant meetings.

Integrate coastal Louisiana and Gulf campaigns with other NWF national programs and interests, engaging in National Advocacy Center meetings, supporting overlapping institutional priorities and collaborating with on-line, communications, lobby team and other key staff to advance agenda. Advocate for and otherwise support key policy reforms that will better protect people, communities, and wildlife, as assigned.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

Candidates must have at least 7 years progressively responsible experience required in helping develop and implement advocacy campaigns, grassroots organizing, media, and environmental advocacy. Congressional experience and/or pertinent federal agency experience preferred.

Must be knowledgeable of how Federal agencies and Congress work.

Must know how to use water restoration laws, programs and policies as a tool to protect wildlife and wild places.

Must be a strategic thinker, well organized, strong communicator, and have a demonstrated ability to set goals and meet deadlines.

Must possess ability to work collaboratively with others.

There will be travel involved in this role – approx. six trips per year and some weekend work may be required.
