Lake Champlain Boat Launch Stewards
Lake Champlain – Vermont and New York
New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission and the Lake Champlain Basin Program are seeking several part-time boat launch stewards to deliver invasive species spread prevention messages to boaters on Lake Champlain during the summer of 2015.
Boat Launch Stewards will greet visitors to Lake Champlain and familiarize the public with invasive species information, while also gathering lake-user information. Stewards will be requested to work eight-hour days for approximately thirty-two hours per week at select boat launches around Lake Champlain from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Stewards will be required to work most weekends. Time off by prior arrangement can be accommodated during this period. Mandatory training will be held May 18-20, 2015 in Grand Isle, Vermont and Paul Smiths, New York.
Successful candidates will be well organized and have excellent communication skills, experience speaking with the public, demonstrated data collection and recording skills, and field work experience. Basic familiarity with boating, angling, and common recreational equipment will be useful. Highly motivated individuals with familiarity with invasive species and/or water recreation experience are encouraged to apply.

Lake Champlain GIS Intern
Grand Isle, Vermont
New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) are seeking an intern to assist the LCBP Education and Outreach team during the spring and summer of 2015.
The GIS Intern will assist with the redevelopment of the LCBP online atlas and may also work on additional GIS and cartography projects. This work will entail the collection, preparation, and evaluation of geospatial data sets. Tasks will also include the assembly of metadata and design of spatial data presentation. The intern will work roughly 20 hours a week April through September. Time off by prior arrangement can be accommodated.
The successful candidate will have experience working in ArcGIS and/or Q GIS, and will be familiar with one or more web mapping platform, such as Leaflet, Mapbox, or ArcGIS Online. Experience with web design, such as basic HTML programming, Dreamweaver, and/or WordPress is also highly desirable. The intern should also be comfortable working independently and with LCBP stakeholders with an interest in geospatial data. An active interest in the geography and water quality of the lake is also encouraged.

Lake Champlain Education and Outreach Intern
Grand Isle, Vermont
New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) are seeking an intern to assist the LCBP Education and Outreach team during the summer of 2015.
The Education and Outreach Intern will perform a variety of tasks, including representing LCBP at various public events, assisting staff at the Resource Room, located within ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain on the Burlington waterfront, and drafting text and visuals for Resource Room displays, the LCBP website, and other outreach materials. The intern may work up to forty (40) hour a week, with occasional evening and weekend hours,from May through September. Time off by prior arrangement can be accommodated.
The successful candidate will be well organized and have excellent written and oral communication skills, will have completed at least two years of higher education (or equivalent experience), will have experience interacting with the public, proficiency using Microsoft Office, and enthusiasm for teaching and learning about Lake Champlain. NEIWPCC – IEC District Intern, Summer 2015
Staten Island, Manhattan, and Port Washington, NY
The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the IEC District seek a Summer Intern to assist with water quality monitoring surveys in western Long Island Sound and the upper East River, as well as with other work at the IEC District Staten Island laboratory and Manhattan office. The intern will participate in boat-based surveys and use portable monitoring equipment to collect field measurements and ambient water samples. Duties will include laboratory analyses of water samples, and preparation of bottles, coolers, equipment, and quality control activities. The intern will also assist with the development of water quality monitoring database. The position will require 30-37.5 hours per week. The anticipated start date is June 15, 2015; and the position will extend for 12 to 14 weeks. Interviews will take place in February or early March, 2015.
The successful candidate will have a minimum 3 years of satisfactory progress towards a Bachelor’s Degree in the environmental sciences, biology, or a related field. Position Title: Information Officer – Hudson River GIS Coordinator

Responsibilities:
- Proactively provide information about NYSERDA program opportunities across market sectors. Position Title: Invasive Plant Management Internship
Location: Redding, Connecticut

Description: Highstead, a regional land conservation and ecological research center, is accepting applications for one field intern to participate in Highstead’s long-term research and monitoring of invasive plant species for the summer of 2015. The primary project will be to map the current extent of Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) on our 150+ acre property. The intern will gain experience identifying the plant and using a Trimble GeoExplorer and ArcGIS to record and map populations. Other potential projects may include designing a restoration planting, herbarium work, or other invasive mapping. The position will be predominantly field-based but will also include data entry, background research, mapping of historical data, and preparing a 15-minute final presentation for Highstead staff.
Qualifications: Upper level undergraduate or recent graduate in botany, plant ecology, or related field. Applicants should have previous experience with field work. Successful applicants must (1) have an interest in invasive plant management (2) be energetic and enthusiastic about conducting intensive fieldwork in hot, humid and sometimes rainy weather; in a landscape with deer ticks; and in forest understories with downed trees and thick, often spiny (i.e. Japanese barberry, multiflora rose) shrub layers. Applicants must also be comfortable working alone.

Description: WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a large-scale research-focused program initiated to develop effective adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change. Its overall objective is to enhance the resilience of social-ecological systems to the impacts of climate change and increased climate variability. The geographical focus of WASCAL is on selected case study watersheds in West Africa.
WASCAL is based on three principle components: a Competence Center, a core Research Program and a Graduate Research Program. The Core Research Program relates to the scientific activities of the Competence Center, and is implemented by a network of German and West African research institutes. Within the core research program, UNU-EHS will analyze rural households’ vulnerabilities and risks to rapid onset and creeping hazards in the context of climate change and explore potential coping and adaptation strategies. Specifically, UNU-EHS deals with the identification, characterization and quantification of major climate change-related hazards to rural households/communities at different spatial and temporal scales, the assessment of the social-ecological system’s social, environmental and economic vulnerabilities as well as their resilience to multiple climate change-related hazards and consequent cascading effects.

Description: The internship opportunity: Supporting an integrated systemic resilience approach natural resource management.
In the second year of the research phase, AWARD will continue building an integrated systemic picture of natural resources in the Olifants River Basin to inform natural resource management practices that build resilience. AWARD has commissioned research on drivers of change of the natural resources in the Olifants, ranging from climate change and political economy to mining, agriculture and waste water treatment works, to understand how these drivers affect natural resources, ecosystem services, and human well-being.
The intern will analyze and synthesize some of this commissioned research to be incorporated into an assessment about which natural resources and related livelihoods are vulnerable. AWARD calls this a resilience assessment. The intern will further support the resilience assessment tasks by developing and narrating diagrams showing the casual links between characteristics of the natural resources, ecosystem services and outcomes in the basin and determining the likely impact of various future scenarios.
This support includes desk-top research, scribing for meetings and organizing materials for field visits. The final two aspects of the internship are: reporting regularly on current practices of natural resource management and providing support for organizations governing water resources. This support includes coordinating meetings and workshops, assisting in writing reports, and presenting about the USAID RESILIM-O project at meetings with strategic partners. The successful applicant will work as part of a broader team.
Responsibilities: Tasks for this position may include the following:
