The Wrangell Mountains Center (WMC) is a private, nonprofit institute which fosters understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of wildlands and mountain culture in Alaska through scientific and artistic inquiry in the Wrangell Mountains. The WMC is located in the small community of McCarthy, near the terminus of the Kennicott Glacier, on private land deep within Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve. Southcentral Alaska’s Wragnell-St Elias is the largest unit of the US park system, encompassing 13.2 million acres of glaciers, rivers, mountains, and forests.

Description:
Working under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Operations Manager managers day-to-day operations of the Wrangell Mountains Center. General responsibilities include supervising and sometimes mentoring selected seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns; assisting with local program marketing; community relations; and other tasks as assigned by the ED. Also works in tandem with the Program Development Coordinators to provide orientation and facility support to the individual Program Directors to ensure their programs run smoothly.
Responsibilities:
- Cultivate a motivated staff team that enjoys working together.
- In consultation with Kitchen Coordinator and Facilities Maintenance, ensure that food preparation, maintenance and custodial needs are addressed, and participate as needed.
- Manage/allocate facility use for various residential and programmatic needs.
- Promote an understanding of and commitment to WMC policies including health and safety, meal service, pets, visitors, vehicles, and cell phone/electrical use.
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Wrangell Mountains Center & McCarthy and Kennecott community.
- Experience managing multiple people in a dynamic working environment.
- Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.

Overview:
The Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives, a program of the Global
Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University, has teamed with
Creative Nonfiction magazine to create the $10,000 Walton Sustainability
Solutions Best Creative Nonfiction Essay Award. The award-winning essay, as well
as other select submissions, will be published in a special “Human Face of
Sustainability” issue of Creative Nonfiction (CNF ). CNF and the Sustainability
Solutions Fair, one of the programs within the Walton Sustainability Solutions
Initiatives, chose to launch this competition because of the growing
conversation around this issue on both a global and an individual level.
Entries submitted in consideration for the prize should be personal essays or
stories that illuminate and present the human side of environmental, economic,
ethical, and/or social challenges related to the state of the planet and our
future. The magazine will favor submissions that blend facts and research with
narrative–employing scenes and description.
In addition to the $10,000 prize, the winner will be invited to a special launch
event hosted by ASU’s Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives. The contest
deadline is May 31, 2013, and The Human Face of Sustainability issue will
be published in Spring 2014. The issue will be guest edited by Donna Seaman.
Additionally, the magazine is seeking an artist to illustrate the issue. The
artist chosen will receive $3,500 and have their work profiled prominently for
at least three months on CNF’s website. He or she will work closely with CNF’s
editorial and design staff to create 8 to 10 original designs to be
featured on the cover and interior of the magazine. All styles of
interpretation, as well as various media (e.g. line drawings, watercolor,
collage) will be considered, providing they are well suited to a print format.

The Farmscape Ecology Program is dedicated to exploring the human and natural dimensions of the landscape of Columbia County, NY through research and outreach. Our interdisciplinary research focuses on historical, current and potential future interactions of people with the land. The Program is part of Hawthorne Valley Association, an educational nonprofit, and is comprised of wildlife ecologist Conrad Vispo, botanist Claudia Knab-Vispo, social scientist Anna Duhon, and technician Kyle Bradford.
Our work is currently focused on the Living Land Project, a multi-year collaborative exploration of the ecology and culture of Columbia County habitats. This Project includes both the mapping of ecological habitats in the County and research into people’s diverse perceptions and interactions with the landscape. By involving community participants in the research and by sharing the results widely, we strive to stimulate, facilitate, and inform a sense of connection to the many dimensions of the landscape.
Description and Responsibilities:
Interns will participate in implementing and supporting cultural research related to the Living Land Project. Upcoming research projects that the intern may be involved with include photo-elicitation interviews with groups of land users (e.g. farmers), children, elders, and other community members about their interaction with the land; roadside surveys of landscape features; historical research into land access and landscape change; and participatory mapping and surveys with community members at local festivals and recreational areas. Internship responsibilities will include helping to facilitate and conduct such community research projects, as well as process, analyze and share the resulting data. Responsibilities may also include helping to create and maintain an interactive web-based site for organizing, collecting and sharing research related to the Living Land Project. Additional data entry or gathering relating to the ecological fieldwork might also be requested. Finally, there is the opportunity to work with the Hawthorne Valley farmers and farm apprentices in the commercial vegetable fields for ½ day each week.
Qualifications:
- Strong interest in cultural research, participatory research methods, and community outreach.
- Comfortable in a rural environment, enthusiastic, and open to working in many different settings, including the outdoors.
- Self-motivated, sociable, enjoys actively working with diverse community members, have a positive attitude, and able to work independently with attention to detail.
- Basic computer skills.
- Some academic and/or work experience in the social sciences, sustainable farming/gardening, or related fields.
- Experience conducting interviews and surveys and doing community-based research and outreach is a plus.
- Experience with GIS software, website design, and social media is a plus.
