Description

Originally posted on Idealist.org: http://www.idealist.org/view/internship/nM6NGMdWNpbD/

The ‘Markets & Enterprise Program’ (MEP) of WRI works at the intersection of the private and public sectors, and seeks to increase capital flows towards sustainable business practices.

Within this Program, the recently-launched “Climate Finance and the Private Sector” Initiative (CFPI) aims to increase private capital flows to climate-friendly activities in developing countries by improving the provision of international climate finance by public institutions, including development financing institutions and other international funding mechanisms. This initiative works in concert with the Institutions and Governance (IGP), and Climate and Energy (CEP) Programs of WRI.

WRI’s Markets and Enterprise Program seeks an Intern to provide research, analysis, and other support for its emerging work streams on climate finance and the role of the private sector. Responsibilities of the Intern will include:

Analyzing the current provision of international climate finance by public institutions and governments, with respect to leveraging private capital flows; this includes collecting public data on development finance institutions’ and their activities, and conducting primary research through interviews with both public and private sector actors.

  • Conducting communications activities including contributing to blog posts, preparing presentations, identifying and organizing outreach activities;
  • Providing background research and administrative support for the CFPI and groups convened by WRI to discuss leveraging private capital flows;
  • Supporting fundraising and project management activities including contact database development and management;

Organization Overview

Friends of the Earth is part of a federation of grassroots groups in 76 countries fighting for a more healthy and just world. Our top domestic campaign priorities include protecting the public from dangerous nuclear reactors, promoting environmentally responsible federal budget practices (including an end to taxpayer subsidies for polluters), and preventing the construction of an oil pipeline that would bring the world’s dirtiest oil from Canada to the United States.  We’re a principled and progressive organization known for speaking sometimes uncomfortable truths to power, and our campaigns demonstrate our belief that the fight for justice and the movement to protect the health of the planet are part of the same struggle.

Description

We are looking for an experienced media relations manager to expand our organization’s communications capacity. The media relations manager will generate media coverage, produce a variety of communications materials, help our campaign staff build relationships with reporters and assist with initiatives to strengthen the marketing and brand of Friends of the Earth. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing plans for generating earned and paid media in consultation with the online director and in collaboration with the rest of our communications team.

  • Draft a variety of written communications content (including but not limited to news releases, blog posts and content for the website, email action alerts, op-eds, letters to newspaper editors, memoranda and magazine articles).
  • Organize and help promote press conferences and other media/communications events.
  • Fact check and edit others’ writing with an eye to both style and content.
  • Ensure that all his/her written communications are consistent with our organization’s values and brand identity. Follow Friends of the Earth’s style guide.
  • Learn how to use and manage various technologies, including our website’s Content Management System (Webiva), Customer Relationship Manager (Salsa), and media contact database (Vocus).
