The Pew environment initiative’s ocean science division (OSD) works to generate and synthesize scientific research to inform conservation policy and frame solutions. The division’s projects include multiyear research projects by outside experts, funded in large part through the Lenfest Ocean Program, and shorter term analyses and syntheses developed to inform specific policy questions developed by the conservation science program. Developing projects that integrate the development of scientific and technical information with the best approach for communicating that information is a significant focus of the conservation science program .
Description:
The manager, Ocean Science Division, facilitates the effective use of science in policy-related activities by Pew marine campaigns. The manager collaborates with Pew campaign staff to develop and manage science projects related to the Pew environment initiative’s program areas. The manager also serves as OSD’s principal liaison to campaign staff and his/her tasks include providing science-related guidance to campaign staff and contributing campaign perspectives to OSD staff. Other responsibilities include supervising an associate-level staff person and working closely with a senior associate who has expertise in economics. This position is located in Washington, DC.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of eight years of relevant professional experience in science, environmental issues, or public policy is required. Experience working in a scientific or technical role within an advocacy organization or policy institution is highly desirable, as is experience developing and managing projects.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
- Demonstrated strategic and analytical skills. Political awareness, with a non-partisan perspective and approach.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, including ease in communicating complex concepts in a clear effective manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop and manage productive relationships with Pew staff, consultants, partners, grantees and others. Operates as a team player, while also able to lead meetings and projects.
- Recognized ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Ability to make decisions and operate effectively in uncertain or changing situations.
- Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel.

Description:
The Outreach Coordinator will work to advance the goals of the Tropical Forest & Climate Initiative (TFCI)’s palm oil campaign by coordinating and implementing a variety of outreach activities aimed at changing corporate and public policies related to tropical forests and palm oil. This will include engaging on federal and international governmental policies in addition to corporate sustainability policies. Priorities include:
- Actively participating in and leading projects within a multi-year outreach campaign to reduce tropical deforestation in corporate supply chains, specifically focused on palm oil;
- Engaging UCS activists, experts, and coalition partners to achieve policy and public education goals on palm oil and land use, and
- Assisting with research and advocacy.
Responsibilities:
- Working closely with the TFCI outreach team to conceive, develop, and implement outreach plans to advance the corporate and public policy goals of the TFCI’s palm oil work.
- Engage UCS activists, experts, and other interested individuals in a variety of consumer and constituent outreach initiatives to achieve the TFCI goals.
- Craft emails, web pages and other products to engage various audiences in the TFCI palm oil and land use work.
- Research targets, policies, and supply chains to strengthen TFCI campaigns and advocacy efforts.
- Organize and participate in public outreach tours to promote UCS reports and products.
- Assist with research and drafting of TFCI analytical products such as fact sheets and reports.

- Successful campaign experience in changing corporate behaviors is desirable.
- Experience with campaign planning and strategy development is required, as is a solid level of understanding of database maintenance, online organizing tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of corporate sustainability, palm oil, and/or other forest and land use issues is preferred.
- Experience working on international policies is also a very strong plus.

Overview:
Cape Cod National Seashore contains a diverse variety of habitats and is characterized by open ocean, beaches, estuaries, and tidal flats. In addition to the marine environment, the Seashore is home to a unique kettle pond system, sensitive vernal pools, and coastal heathlnds – a globally uncommon habitat supporting species that are correspondingly rare. More than 17 federally-listed threatened or endangered species are found throughout the Seashore and its marine waters. The physical processes that initially formed Cape Cod continue to reshape the area via wind, waves, tides, and longshore currents. Humans have been a part of this dynamic landscape for at least 10,000 years. These ecosystems processes have created and continue to influence the sensitive natural and cultural heritage that the Nickerson Conservation Fund is dedicated to study.
Funding Opportunity Description:
The Nickerson Conservation Fellowship Committee is currently soliciting proposals for the Nickerson Conservation Fellowship award. Proposals should briefly outline the objectives of the study, and include methods and budget. Emphasis should be placed on how the study will increase conservation efforts or contribute to the protection of the Seashore’s natural and cultural resources.
Eligibility: Anyone can apply, regardless of student of professional status. Awardees will be asked to present their findings as part of the Seashore Science Symposium.
Evaluation Criteria: Applications will be judged on the basis of: technical merit, management applicability, feasibility or project, cost effectiveness, applicant’s accomplishments, and potential for boosting professional development. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate or consult with CCNS natural resource management on staff in developing project proposals.
Terms: Completed application packets are due by April 15, 2013. A stipend of approximately $3,000 will be provided. The final $500 of the stipend will be awarded upon receipt of the fellow’s final report and is due within one year of the initial award. Indirect costs (overhead) will not be supported by the fellowship. Laboratory space and field equipment may be available. Awardees will be notified in mid-April.
