Since its founding in London in 1984, EIA has pioneered the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes and other abuse against the natural world—using its unique evidence to campaign against illegal logging, illegal wildlife trade
and other environmental threats. Highlights of EIA’s achievements include instigating the 1989 global ban on international elephant ivory trade; the 1992 U.S. Wild Bird Conservation Act, limiting U.S. imports of exotic birds; an Indonesian government operation that became the biggest crackdown on illegal logging in history; a historic global agreement signed in Montreal, Canada, to phase out greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 22 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide; and most recently, a precedent-setting U.S. ban on the import and trade of illegally logged timber and associated products. Currently EIA leads a coalition of over 40 environmental, labor and industry groups to support effective implementation of the Lacey Act, the world’s first prohibition on trade in all illegally sourced wood.
