Description

The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) seeks a creative and experienced transportation associate to help implement the Center’s transportation initiatives through C2ES’s Plug-In Electric Vehicle Dialogue Group and provide outreach to policy makers, stakeholders and the public.The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to C2ES’s mission and ongoing analysis of transportation issues. The position will report to the Vice President for Technology and Innovation and have a term of at least one year.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate, guide, and provide communication and outreach support to a network of partnering organizations and agencies to help implement the Plug-in Electric Vehicle Dialogue Group’s Action Plan;
  • Implement and revise the communication and outreach strategies of C2ES’ transportation initiatives in coordination with its program staff as needed;
  • Develop communications and educational materials, both printed and electronic, including transportation-related content on the C2ES website;
  • Create a PEV-related policy database;
  • Contribute to the tracking and analysis of transportation-related issues and policies; and
  • Represent the organization at transportation-related events, hearings, and meetings.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in environmental policy, energy resources, communications or related field;
  • 2-3 years of experience on automotive, transportation or energy issues required;
  • Working knowledge of issues facing the automotive, transportation and/or energy sector;
  • Experience developing and implementing communication and outreach programs;
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience with web services such as maps tools and document management systems;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all constituent groups and partner organizations.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.

Under the direction of the Director Energy Research and Analysis, this position helps lead UCS initiatives to shape federal, regional and state electricity markets, regulation and policies to increase renewable energy and demand-side resources while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Conduct research and analysis in support of UCS’ energy campaign and other program development work. Serve as senior spokesperson to advocate for UCS positions to policy makers and key constituencies, and present analyses and policy positions in public forums. Conduct expert engagement to key constituencies.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop policy positions and analyses relating to electricity markets, planning and regulation at the federal and regional levels that govern electricity markets. Relevant forums include the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Congress, the Department of Energy, the North American Electric Reliability Council, National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Regional Transmission Organizations.
  • Play a lead role in activities affecting transmission access, regulation and pricing at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, at regional transmission organizations and independent system operators, and in related Congressional initiatives. Help define and advance UCS strategy to successfully influence regulatory and legislative outcomes to increase deployment of renewable energy and demand-side resources. Participate in NGO and industry coalitions to advance UCS objectives.
  • Monitor the development and implementation of regional transmission organization strategies, in conjunction with regional office staff, and engagement with non-RTO utilities and regulators to advance the accelerated deployment of renewables in the most appropriate service areas.
  • Conduct research and analysis in support of UCS’ energy campaign and senior staff on legislative and regulatory initiatives affecting the electric industry, including market structure and regulation, transmission and distribution, reliability, and the integration and expansion of clean energy technologies into the grid.
  • Participate in related NGO and industry clean energy coalitions and represent UCS in meetings with federal and state regulators. Develop and expand UCS staff expertise and visibility on issues related to energy markets, policy and regulation; participate in the development of related filings, letters and interventions; and manage external consultants and legal advisors on key regulatory and markets initiatives.
  • Present UCS positions at conferences, workshops and other key audiences. Respond to media requests; prepare op-eds and letters to the editor; and develop talking points, blog postings, web copy and other analytical and message products for use in UCS communication, educational, advocacy and outreach activities as needed.
  • Work with other UCS staff to help educate members of Congress and the administration, governors, federal agency and regulatory leaders and their staffs about UCS positions, and help advance UCS’s legislative agenda.
  • Advise and educate UCS staff on the intersection of UCS clean energy goals and objectives and related national and regional market policies and regulations that affect those goals.
  • Maintain awareness of role as representative of UCS; consider impact of activities on organization reputation and credentials in public and private sectors; direct energies whenever possible to promote UCS, advance organization objectives, enhance funding opportunities, and substantiate credibility. Prepare and submit periodic internal reports on activities.

Qualifications

Position requires broad and sophisticated knowledge of the electricity sector and climate and energy policy, acquired through completion of at least a master’s degree program in a relevant area (public policy, economics, science, engineering, law, or related field or equivalent experience). Also required is detailed knowledge of state and federal legislative and regulatory policy making processes that affect the electricity sector. Strong and demonstrated research and analytic skills are essential, as is the ability to work in a team setting with other technical, outreach, advocacy, communication, and development staff. Understanding of electricity sector modeling and background in project management and budgeting is also preferred. Proficiency in standard office technology, including word processing, electronic communication, and spreadsheets is required. Excellent writing, editing, speaking and public contact skills are also required.

Position requires seven to ten years of progressively responsible and relevant experience and demonstrated commitment to the application of science to public policy, especially on climate and energy issues.

Cracking the Energy Code teaches the fundamentals of low energy design and the processes available to demonstrate compliance. Description

The SAC is seeking a technical Environmental Sustainability Analyst to support in continued improvement of the Higg Index, in particular the Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) and the life cycle assessment (LCA) based metrics that will be integrated into future versions of the Higg Index.

The position is entrepreneurial and the Environmental Sustainability Analyst will have the opportunity to provide measurable impact in supporting SAC’s continued effort in improving the Higg Index 1.0’s groundbreaking work.

The successful candidate should have a BS in Environmental Science or Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical degree, and up to 5 years work experience in environmental sustainability and LCA. The candidate must have strong math skills and the ability to apply systems thinking. Experience in product environmental analysis, LCA and LCA data management and environmental sustainability software tools are required.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Environmental Sustainability Manager, though with a great deal of autonomy. As such, the candidate will have a high degree of maturity, personal integrity and be extremely self-motivated. The candidate must have good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information so that it is understandable to a non-technical audience.

SAC’s accomplishments are greatly rooted in the staff’s ability to collaborate internally and with SAC members, subject matter experts and external stakeholders. This position is highly collaborative and the successful candidate should have an exceptional ability to listen and foster collaborative innovation with stakeholders with diverse interests.

Responsibilities

Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) (average 50% of time, higher initially):

  • Support the development of the MSI governance process, which involves creation of an LCA data review protocol, data submission form, and an assessment of bias methodology.
  • Support the requirements definition, testing and release of the Federated Wiki, the MSI data platform, to SAC and its members.
  • Support MSI review cycles and management of standardized datasets, which require data submission, review, approval and update into the Federated Wiki.
  • Manage the MSI Federated Wiki community: answer (or find answers to) questions; respond and elevate comments to appropriate parties for answering; account setup and support; manage multiple users contributing at the same time; content assistance and data import/export support.
  • Work closely with the Environmental Sustainability Manager to assist the Materials Working Group in carrying out work plans, including technical research and recommendations, and assisting in Working Group teleconferences (agendas, notes, follow-ups).

Metrics (30%):

  • Support planning and conducting a pilot that will test SAC’s new product category rules and environmental product declarations.
  • Review, assess and benchmark LCA and data collection software tools to support the pilot.
  • Conduct technical research to support the development of a framework and scoring system that integrate LCA-based metrics into the Higg Index.
  • Work closely with the Environmental Sustainability Manager to assist the Metrics Working Group in carrying out work plans, including assisting in Working Group teleconferences (agendas, notes, follow-ups).

Higg Index Evolution (average 10% of time, lower initially)

  • Support on-going work to improve the Higg Index and its framework for measuring the environmental and social/labor impacts of products, supply chains, and organizations. Specific enhancement projects include: supporting a consensus-driven process to standardize Higg Index section weightings, development of Higg Index equivalencies of various certifications, and others to be defined and prioritized.

Systems (average 10% of time, lower initially)

  • Work closely with the Environmental Sustainability Manager to assist the Systems Working Group in selecting technology and partners to develop and implement SAC’s web-based Higg Index tools and data platform.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree, preferably advanced degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical degree
  • Strong math skills and ability to apply systems thinking
  • Minimum 1-2 years work experience in environmental sustainability, LCA and LCA software tools. Software/database design experience is a plus
  • Strong working knowledge and hands-on experience with LCA methodologies, ISO 140ff standards and conducting detailed and screening LCAs
  • Solid knowledge of methods, perspectives and applications of LCA, including Product Category Rules and Environmental Product Declarations

The Garrison Institute’s Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) Initiative is currently seeking a full-time Program Coordinator. The CMB Initiative explores the connection between social sciences research and human-based solutions to climate change. We work to translate scientific knowledge into smart, new programs that reduce our energy and carbon footprints in ways that are better
aligned with existing social systems, behavioral predispositions and cognitive biases. The Initiative seeks to leverage the power of organizations, networks and social institutions operating in cities, communities, environmental organizations, real estate and building management – to facilitate pro-environmental behavior change using a middle-out social change approach.

Within the Climate, Mind and Behavior Initiative there are three projects, each of which hosts an annual symposium. The first, Climate, Mind and Behavior,applies key concepts from the social sciences to people-centered climate and energy solutions. The second, Climate, Cities and Behavior (CCB), explores how city leaders – mayors, planners, sustainability directors and transportation commissioners – can use social science insights to foster pro-social and proenvironmental behavior in their cities and reduce their carbon footprint. Similarly, the third, Climate, Buildings and Behavior (CBB), explores how building managers and occupants can use social science insights to foster pro-social and pro-environmental behavior in their buildings and reduce their carbon footprint.

The Program Coordinator provides administrative and programmatic support to the Climate, Mind and Behavior (CMB) Initiative Director. This position is responsible for coordinating the CMB Symposia, drafting program communications, coordinating content for electronic newsletters and managing an online resource library. This person will also provide administrative support, serve as the point of contact for all general inquiries, and oversee the Initiative database. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for collecting articles and other information on relevant topics, drafting surveys, writing overviews of interesting articles, and providing preliminary assessments of research data. This position will report to the Initiative director and will often supervise an intern or volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Coordination of the Climate, Mind and Behavior Symposia Series (CMB, CCB, CBB)
  • Organizes monthly steering committee calls during the months leading up to each Symposium
  • Assists with solicitation of scholarships and sponsorships to support the CMB Symposia
  • Sends invitations, keeps track of responses; coordinates participant travel needs and reimbursements; reviews scholarship applications
  • Prepares and disseminates Symposium materials, including a agenda, participant list with bios, participant contact information, and name tags

Description

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating Business United for Conservation (BUC), an industry partnership founded in 2009 that identifies and removes barriers to industry growth, uncovers workforce needs, highlights business-to-business procurements opportunities, and promotes industry best practices. Industry Partnerships bring together multiple employers to identify and address common workforce needs. He or she will also help educational institutions align programs to industry demand, and develop industry credentials to give local companies more confidence in their hires and allow employees more mobility and earnings potential. BUC’s participating businesses represent construction, design, engineering, and maintenance sectors. A small percentage focus solely on green infrastructure and stormwater management; most are companies that provide general building, site development, construction services, environmental services, and some heavy infrastructure and transportation services. BUC’s participating businesses are largely of small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. This is reflective of the regional economy, particularly in Philadelphia County where 93% of the County’s businesses have fewer than 50 employees.

The Project Coordinator will also assist in the facilitation of a Local Community of Practice for BUC businesses. This Local Community of Practice is a facilitated peer-mentoring program that will help fill the need for continued community building among the cross-sector businesses involved with stormwater management . A Community of Practice is designed to gather key change agents working on a particular issue. A cohort of 14- 20 local business owners will come together to hone their business strategies, learn key skills to advance their leadership regionally, and form close, collaborative relationships with support from skilled facilitators. The goal is to expand and support their individual and collective work, building more resilient and innovative triple bottom line businesses and strengthening their industry in service of building a stronger local economy.

Responsibilities

Activities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage Business United for Conservation (BUC), an industry partnership with business partners in stormwater management industries; Expand and refine current business partner strategies to increase the value of participation
  • Coordinate monthly meetings, events, and site visits; Improve “overall experience” at meetings and events
  • Support grant reporting and research opportunities for new funding sources for additional business services
  • Keep robust notes on business relationships and communications in our Salesforce database
  • Increase number of companies engaged in Business United for Conservation by 30% through quarterly meetings, online communications about bid opportunities, etc.
  • Administer training funds for BUC businesses to train 150 workers per year in high-priority skills identified by their employers
  • Coordinate logistics for Local Community of Practice pilot and assist in facilitation
  • Promote government-to-business communication and work with Philadelphia Water Department to reduce barriers to contracts awarded to and fulfilled by local businesses, minority-owned businesses and woman-owned businesses
  • Research resources for business partners and develop effective communication tools for their distribution; Produce regular email communications to BUC businesses to keep them informed about business opportunities, policy development, etc.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong facilitation skills. Must have experience facilitating groups/teams/ workshops and a past positive experience of being facilitated
  • Desire to learn how to facilitate at a deeper level and be willing to commit to a learning process
  • 3-5 years of experience working with local businesses; Business development, sales, and/or recruitment experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the public workforce system and/or knowledge of stormwater management issues
  • Excellent written communication skills, demonstrated through writing samples
  • Excellent oral communication skills, including public presentations

The City then partnered with Boston and Philadelphia to create the Northeast Regional Electric Vehicle Partnership (REVP) with the goal of reducing policy barriers to electric vehicles in large cities and undertaking high impact strategies to grow the marketplace.

New York City’s comprehensive sustainability agenda seeks to increase the adoption of electric vehicles as part of its overarching goals to reduce the City’s greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2030 and achieve the cleanest air quality of any major U.S. City. Emissions from conventional fossil-fuel based automobiles are one of the leading sources of criteria air pollutants in New York City and they are also a source of benzene and other carcinogenic substances. About CoRR
Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR) is a working group of companies, dedicated to recovering the value in commonly wasted resources. CoRR accelerates the development of effective waste diversion technologies and programs by conducting pilot programs, related research, and hosting conferences.  CoRR is currently focused on recovering the value in food waste and food packaging generated by the accommodation, foodservice, and retail sectors.
