Description

A postgraduate fellowship project is available (via the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education) at the Climate Change Advisor’s Office (CCAO) of the U.S. Forest Service (FS). The CCAO works at the forefront of integrated science delivery and policy development aimed at sustainable management through adapting forests and grasslands to a changing climate, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Responsibilities

The Fellow will perform activities independently and as part of a virtual team primarily focused on the translation and delivery of carbon assessment science and tools to National Forest System planners and managers. The assignment will include support to other climate change projects as time and priorities allow.

Under the mentorship of the natural resource staff specialist, the Fellow will:

  • Support a team of scientists by translating and compiling carbon assessment products into useable formats for National Forest System field units. These could include compiling data sets, writing assessments, developing maps, and other products.
  • Help develop and maintain a webpage (content and layout) to share carbon assessment science, tools, and products
  • Develop communication materials to expand knowledge and use of carbon assessment research and tools
  • Contribute to science syntheses and delivery on other high priority or emerging issues.

In addition to supporting the carbon assessment project, up to 50% of the Fellow’s time may be spent supporting other climate change projects, including webpage maintenance.

This position provides an opportunity to:

  • Learn about natural resource research and policy issues at a national level
  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the Forest Service’s response to climate change
  • Improve science delivery to managers and other partners
  • Understand and contribute to the intersection of science and policy.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to interact with scientists in our research stations and managers in the National Forest System. This is primarily a headquarters-based fellowship, but opportunities to support field operations and research are possible. The Fellow may explore options for future career opportunities and graduate research and take advantage of additional training opportunities.

Qualifications

Strong candidates for the position will have:

  • Education/experience in forestry or other natural resource management, policy, and/or research
  • Education/experience in carbon management or accounting principles and practices
  • Experience with GIS technology and products
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively synthesize information
  • Experience with website design/management and publishing software is a plus.

Applicants must have received a Master’s degree in forest management, ecology, biology, environmental science, or a related field within five years of the desired starting date.

This appointment is full-time for one year and may be extended for an additional three years upon the recommendation of the Forest Service and availability of funding. The annual stipend for this position is $51,630.

Benefits

Housing, transportation and relocation costs will not be paid. Taxes and other federal, state, and local deductions are the responsibility of the Fellow. There will likely be opportunities for some professional travel during this appointment. The fellow must show proof of health insurance. Health insurance is available through Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). If the fellow selects coverage under the ORISE policy, a supplement to the stipend may be provided to offset a portion of this expense. The fellow does not become an employee of the Forest Service or ORISE.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree in political science, public administration, urban affairs, public policy, or sustainability-related field preferred. Demonstrated leadership and record of achievement in the field of sustainability, including a minimum of five years (with graduate degree) to ten years (without graduate degree) of progressively responsible relevant experience in policy analysis, program development, or research; or a combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of issues related to sustainability. Experience in working with city officials and knowledge of city initiatives in these areas preferred. Experience with fundraising and grant management a plus. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Description

The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) in Anchorage sponsors research relating to the fisheries or marine ecosystems in the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea, and Arctic Ocean, and is seeking a skilled science communication manager to fill the full-time, exempt position of Communication and Outreach Manager. This position will be responsible for managing the communication and outreach programs of NPRB (http://www.nprb.org), working with funded researchers on outreach for the annually funded science projects and sharing research results from the integrated ecosystem research projects – the Bering Sea Project (http://bsierp.nprb.org), the Gulf of Alaska Project (http://gulfofalaska.nprb.org) and Arctic initiatives (http://arctic.nprb.org).

Responsibilities

Specifically, this Communication and Outreach Manager will spearhead the web, social media, video and image library projects, including:

  • Participate in website revision planning and implementation and transfer information to new sites
  • Write web stories for all NPRB websites related to ecosystem projects and regular science programs; track and report on website metrics.
  • Implement and maintain social media presence.
  • Work with outside design consultant and NPRB staff to develop and maintain organized, searchable in-house image library, using cataloging software such as MediaPro
  • Develop and monitor system for off-site digital upload of annual photo contest entries into NPRB photo library system
  • Collect and organize images from researchers to accompany research stories in print and online,
  • Input and organize metadata for existing and new image files. Work with NPRB staff and stakeholders to keep tags, keywords and other elements related to files up-to-date and searchable
  • Coordinate, oversee and log all photo library usage, insuring proper credit is given and making others aware of potential copyright issues

The Communication and Outreach Manager will also help guide researchers in outreach activities and share research results including:

  • Work with scientists and NPRB Program Managers to write and/or edit and proofread research stories, project synopses, research summaries, calendars, reports and other content as needed;
  • Set up and staff NPRB displays at science and educational conferences;
  • Assist with planning and hosting communication workshops at the annual Alaska Marine Science Symposium and educational professional development workshops.

The Communication and Outreach Manager will work in the Anchorage office under the supervision of the Communication and Outreach Director, and will work closely with the science team and Science Director. Candidates should demonstrate success in executing science communication programs and a solid working knowledge of marine science. Familiarity with Alaska’s marine ecosystems is preferred.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or marine science and a proven track record in communications with at least five years of experience in managing science communication programs and communicating science to public audiences. Experience interpreting ocean science, consulting with scientific investigators, and translating research findings for appropriate audiences. Knowledge of science communication principles, media, and public education techniques. Advanced knowledge of common web editing tools, social media, Internet resources, system management on server-client systems, communications software, and networking solutions. Proficiency in MS Office, Dreamweaver/Contribute, web content-management systems, iMovie, Photoshop, Bridge, Final Cut, MediaPro and HTML preferred. A motivated, self-starter with a positive attitude and ability to work well in a small team environment, capacity to multi-task, superior writing and communication skills, and a strong interest in the marine sciences also required.

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) seeks a senior level researcher to build upon and expand SEI’s climate change mitigation research in the forestry, land use and agriculture sectors.

The Senior Policy Researcher will join SEI’s Seattle team and lead research activities that assess and advance the contribution of forestry, agriculture, and other land use to climate change mitigation.  Areas of focus will depend in part on the successful applicant’s particular strengths and are likely to include several of the following topics:  terrestrial carbon cycling, bioenergy and biocarbon potentials, life-cycle assessment, emissions accounting frameworks, AFOLU policies, REDD+, and carbon markets.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and implement innovative research projects addressing policies and actions to enhance biological carbon sequestration and reduce GHG emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use management.
  • Maintain and build relationships with existing funders and partners; find and secure new funding opportunities.
  • Manage, mentor, and collaborate with staff researchers, provide regular guidance and feedback to colleagues, and monitor the quality of the research process.
  • Explore joint research opportunities and collaborate with colleagues at other SEI centers.
  • Review and manage project outputs from the research team, including publications and other materials to ensure they meet the project objectives and SEI quality standards.
  • Present externally and raise the profile of SEI research.

Qualifications

The applicant should possess outstanding leadership, management, organizational, interpersonal, and networking abilities. She/he should have both a strong interdisciplinary inclination in research efforts and a strong commitment to protecting the natural environment and improving human well-being.

The position requires:

  • An advanced degree and significant work experience, a Ph.D plus 4 years of work experience or M.S. degree plus 8 years of work experience, and a publication record in related field such as forestry and agriculture mitigation, biocarbon policy, natural resource economics, bioenergy systems, land use or terrestrial carbon cycling.
  • Substantial knowledge of and networks and contacts in one or more of the following policy arenas: REDD+, carbon markets, bioenergy LCA and related policies (e.g. LCFS), terrestrial carbon cycling, sustainability requirements for bioenergy, and integrated approaches to water, energy, food/feed/fiber, and land use.

Technological Pathways to Lower Carbon Transportation — Pace Energy and Climate Center — Sep. 25th

On Tuesday September 25th in NYC, the Pace Energy & Climate Center will be hosting a free day-long workshop entitled Technological Pathways to Lower Carbon Transportation.

 

The workshop will highlight emerging technologies and markets in separate panels on electric vehicles, natural gas vehicles, and advanced biofuels.  Each panel will feature experts with knowledge and experience with scientific, industrial, and commercial aspects of their respective topics.  The goal of the workshop is to encourage forward thinking and engage the audience in new low carbon transportation opportunities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Representatives from many of the states participating in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Clean Fuel Standard discussions will be attending as well.

The individual selected for the Community River Champion fellowship will report to the Executive Director and assume responsibility for developing and implementing all stewardship programs at CWC. The Champion will also coordinate with CWC’s Education Coordinator and Monitoring Coordinator to pursue the organization’s mission: preserving and protecting coastal watersheds through education, stewardship and monitoring.

Responsibilities

 This position is a part-time (~20 hrs/week) role leading CWC’s stewardship programs, working with other CWC staff and volunteers. This position requires a flexible, creative, energetic, team-oriented, internally-driven individual who is passionate about environmental issues. Excellent computer skills and a comfort level presenting to both adults and youth in group settings are essential. Event planning and volunteer management experience are considered a plus for this role.

Responsibilities

 Scope of work: Support the Climate Change Mitigation program in WCS Global Initiatives (Todd Stevens, James Watson and Tom Evans) in three main areas of climate change mitigation work, primarily REDD+.

1.Management of existing and prospective market REDD+ projects,
including:
a.Coordinate with current and prospective private sector partners
to identify potential projects for investment and project
development;
b.Communication with WCS field-based climate change technical
advisors and providing materials on evolving mitigation
landscape.
c.Coordinate and progress private sector partnerships in WCS REDD+
projects, including the Makira project and carbon activities
undertaken by COMACO.
2.Program Development:
a.Coordinate and contribute to relevant bilateral and multilateral
REDD+ financing opportunities, including contributing to donor
assessments
b.Help raise funds for WCS’s REDD+ activities, including site-
based activities and emerging policy work.
3.Policy and legal work on REDD+
a.Support selected country programs in furthering REDD+ regulatory
frameworks, including Papua New Guinea
b.Provide policy and legal analysis support to WCS-led REDD+
projects

Qualifications

Requirements include a masters degree or commensurate work experience in forestry, PES, economics, business, or a related field. Experience on climate change or forestry projects generally and REDD in particular, and other conservation finance mechanisms (trust funds, biodiversity offsets, etc.) would be an advantage. Additional skills include remote sensing, carbon stock accounting. An important part of the job will be organizing work programs, facilitating communication among geographically dispersed collaborators, colleagues and government officials, and interacting with ODA institutions and others active in supporting REDD programs

Description

Since 1999, the Research and Policy Division of the Environmental Law Institute has awarded a prestigious annual fellowship for outstanding recent law school graduates.

The law fellow works closely with ELI attorneys and other professionals, including ELI’s domestic and international partners, to advance environmental protection by analyzing existing legal tools, developing new ones, and crafting innovative approaches to implementation. This may require considering how environmental protection is affected by other laws and policies that are related to environmental laws—e.g., those governing energy, taxation, and land use.

Responsibilities

Assignments include legal research and writing tasks across all ELI program areas, and the law fellow may be asked to make public presentations and assist in facilitating training activities. The law fellow is expected to assume substantial responsibility.

Qualifications

The fellowship hiring process is rigorous and highly competitive. Applicants must have a top academic record and possess superior legal research and writing skills. Law review experience is preferred; foreign language skills are a plus. The fellowship is awarded to a recent law school graduate (judicial law clerks are invited to apply). The one-year position begins in September of each year.
