Description

The Coastal Projects Intern will contribute to applied coastal and marine research and restoration efforts, with a focus on shellfish restoration and shoreline stabilization projects.  The position will primarily involve supporting project implementation and development.  Other responsibilities will comprise a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, literature research, data entry, and communication with local residents.  The intern will be exposed to a range of opportunities during the course of the position duration.  These may include GIS analyses, learning about conservation of large landscapes, and gaining exposure to a global conservation organization.  The position will be based at The Nature Conservancy’s New Jersey Delaware Bayshores office, located in Delmont, New Jersey.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the permitting, project design, and monitoring of an oyster reef restoration project.
  • Assist with GIS and field-based shoreline assessments.
  • Assist with the development of a coastal adaptation plan for a local municipality.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months of experience.

Description

The DC Oceans Advocate represents and advances the legislative and policy priorities of NRDC’s Oceans Program with Congress and the Administration. These priorities include promotion of sustainable fisheries, protection of valuable ocean habitats and biodiversity, improved ocean governance and addressing the ocean impacts of ocean acidification.

Responsibilities

  • Play a leading role in NRDC’s ocean advocacy with Congress and the Administration; develop and implement advocacy strategies that advance NRDC’s Ocean Program priorities.
  • Develop and implement strategies to defeat efforts that would derail or harm Ocean Program’s priorities.

The Technical Assistance Program Officer delivers ICLEI’s renewable energy activities under the direction of the Director of Renewable Energy Programs. Initial efforts will focus on SunShot Solar Outreach Partnership (SolarOPs) efforts to help communities throughout the United States remove barriers in their local solar markets.

Responsibilities

A. General

  1. Assist local governments in the identification and development of policies, programs and practices to reduce GHG emissions through implementation of clean energy solutions

Qualifications

Eligible applicants will possess advanced knowledge of or experience working with local governments on the topics of energy and/or sustainability initiatives, particularly of solar energy. ICLEI prefers candidates who hold an advanced degree in a technical, planning or policy-related field and have at least two years of work experience in energy/climate, planning, transportation, waste, urban environmental issues, or related fields OR who hold BA/BS degree and possess five years of relevant experience. The Director of Strategic Initiatives leads Urban Habitat’s key strategic projects that include the Leadership Institute/Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (LI/BCLI) and the Social Equity Caucus (SEC), which convenes the organization’s annual signature event, the State of the Region. Responsibilities

Program Design, Management and Implementation:

Play a lead role in researching, identifying, designing, and implementing leadership-development and capacity-building strategies to support UH’s priority programs and campaigns. World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Program Officer to be responsible for engaging companies on their supply chain impacts, especially scope three greenhouse gas emissions and water risks associated with the production and sourcing of raw materials derived from agriculture and forestry operations. The Program Officer will be responsible for research and project management tasks related to evaluating GHG and water impacts including working with companies to develop mitigation of risks and reduction of GHG emissions. These projects will help WWF deliver its conservation mission by transforming business practices, championing sustainable solutions, and leveraging corporate assets for broader reach.

Responsibilities

  1. Research and prepare background materials for WWF’s private sector work, with an emphasis on scope three GHG emissions, water footprint and water risk, assists with program and project management by developing, implementing, coordinating and supervising projects related to calculating water footprint. This work will include updating data in the footprint tool that WWF has created, updating the methodology of the tool, and other potential activities.
  2. Engage private sector stakeholders via phone, email, in-person meetings on strategies to reduce GHG emissions in supply chains, engage within company business units, develop tools and analyses, etc.
  3. Prepare and provide concise and compelling presentations to corporate and NGO audiences on reducing GHG emissions and engaging in water stewardship, support fundraising activities, including developing and editing proposal narratives, represent WWF at relevant events and conferences related to business and climate change, GHG emissions, agriculture, GHG reporting and reductions, water risk, water stewardship, etc.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Research Reserve invites the public to celebrate National Estuaries Day and our 30th anniversary at an interactive “Science on the River” open house at Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, N. Y. on Saturday, September 15, 2012from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Scientists from the Research Reserve and other regional research organizations will be on hand to answer questions about their work and demonstrate techniques for studying the Hudson. Each presentation will feature a chance to get involved, with demonstrations and activities for young and old alike.

Help take a sediment core from the cove and discover what it can teach us. Canoe a tidal marsh of the Hudson (weather and space permitting). Enjoy a live birds of prey program. Help fish the waters around Norrie Point to find out who lives there. See how the types of organisms living in a stream indicate its health. Learn what “SAV” means and why it’s important to the river. Also, many games and activities are planned especially for our youngest visitors. This program is free and most exhibit areas are wheelchair accessible. There’s something for everyone at “Science on the River”!

Description

We are looking for a part-time experienced finance manager to join our fun-loving, hard-working and kind-hearted team in our San Francisco headquarters. The Finance Manager will manage the accounting operations of the organization including budgeting, auditing, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and internal policies and procedures. He or she will oversee development and implementation of financial systems and will [take the lead on] producing accounting reports to staff and board. The financial manager may also assume responsibility for financial functions [at times when the Deputy or Executive Directors are traveling or unavailable].

Responsibilities

  • Function as gatekeeper for all budgets and reports;
  • Controller on all expenses, payroll and contractor fees;
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings;
  • Supervise all bookkeeping and report generation and serve as primary liaison to any financial consultants;
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts;
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management;
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit;
  • Coordinate cash flow reporting, P&L’s and balance sheets for management team and board of directors finance and/or audit committee;
  • Facilitate organizational and programmatic budget creation process and produce ongoing budgetary updates as needed;
  • Controller of all cash bank accounts, credit lines, pension funds and stock holdings.

Qualifications

  • Extensive software skills with applications such as Word and Excel required, (Salesforce experience a plus)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration. Master’s Degree or CPA Certification preferred. Minimum of five years of overall professional experience. Ideally three or more years of broad financial and operations management experience, with a non-profit organization with a budet of [more than $1.5 million].
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude and ability to follow through on instructions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well with as part of a team as well as independently
  • Proficient in both PC and Mac
  • Self-motivated and highly organized with ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Superb attention to detail and sharp memory
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and complete work efficiently
  • Strong commitment to Amazon Watch’s mission
  • Flexibility, sense of humor and critical thinking skills
  • Legal work authorization to be employed in the United States
  • Prior experience working with Environmental, Social Justice or Human Rights
    organizations is a plus

Teatown is looking for a conservation scientist to assist with its regional programs. This is a newly created position with potential for growth.

Qualifications

The successful candidate with have experience with: natural resource inventories and ecological/wildlife monitoring; the preparation of land management plans; conducting outreach to a variety of stakeholders (primarily adults); data collection, analysis and management; and GIS. Strong written and oral communication skills are required; specifically the presentation of technical information to general audiences. Familiarity with NY environmental groups/organizations and a Master’s degree are strongly preferred (B.S. required).
