Description: Third Way’s Social Policy & Politics Program advances the case for moderate-led U.S. politics, advocates for 21st century education policies, and aims for progress on hot-button social issues like marriage for gay couples, guns, abortion, marijuana, and social mobility. In our politics work, we conduct original research and provide analysis of existing polling and trend data to educate policymakers, advocates, the media, and others about the beliefs, policy preferences, and concerns of self-identified moderate voters. Our education work aims to modernize the teaching profession and establish an education agenda and narrative that allows moderate Democrats to reclaim their title as the party of education. On social policy, we offer groundbreaking new frameworks, approaches, and policy solutions to move our country forward and find common ground on often divisive social issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce internal background memos on specific policy issues for the Social Policy & Politics team and Third Way senior staff;
  • Attend events and Hill meetings as a representative of Third Way and reported back to the Social Policy & Politics team;
  • Compose draft letters of support for specific pieces of legislation for submission to the Congressional Record;
  • Track the progress of ballot measures and state legislative efforts on social policy issues in the states; and,
  • Research, analyze, and brief the Social Policy & Politics team about new public opinion research on relevant issues.

Requirements:

  • Education: The ideal candidate will be in graduate school or have just finished a degree
  • Policy interest: A knowledge of and interest in national politics is necessary

Research skills: A strong background in quantitative analysis, outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as an excellent attention to detail, are imperative.

Description: The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent nonprofit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation, in order to benefit public health and mitigate climate change. The ICCT is a small and dynamic organization that offers an opportunity to directly contribute to policies addressing climate change and air quality impacts from the transportation sector. The ICCT has offices in Washington DC, San Francisco, and Berlin.

The ICCT has an internship opportunity in its Washington, DC office to work with our fuels program on environmental issues related to expanding palm oil biodiesel use in Indonesia. This position will be attractive for students and graduates interested in deforestation, land use change and development economics. Experience living or working in Indonesia and/or Indonesian language skills would be an advantage. We expect that applicants will have one or more degrees in technical disciplines such as environmental science, engineering, economics, or the pure sciences. We are also interested in applications from highly numerate candidates with a focus in politics and international relations. Preference will be given to students with, or working towards, postgraduate qualifications, although comparable experience will be considered, as will applications from exceptional undergraduates. The successful applicant will work on some or all of the following questions:

  • Assessing the environmental impacts of increasing palm oil biofuel demand in Indonesia;
  • Analyzing opportunities for the development of advanced biofuel industries in Indonesia using wastes and residues as feedstocks;
  • Understanding the potential to reduce fossil diesel consumption in Indonesia through vehicle efficiency measures.

Our Fuels Program is actively engaged globally in the development of policies to promote the use of cleaner fuels in transport. The successful applicant may also be asked to contribute to other projects that work toward the broader mission of the ICCT.

Our team is currently working to require labeling of genetically engineerd foods sold in New Jersey but we have successfully passed local, county, and statewide legislation to stop fracking, prevent the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms, halt the privatization of water, and a host of other issues. Responsibilities: The duties of the field organizer will be to educate the public on critical consumer and environmental issues and to help build strength in numbers to effect policy changes. Description: The New York State Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) coordinates and implements New York State’s disaster recovery programs in response to damages sustained by Super Storms Sandy, Irene and Lee. GOSR provides funding and grants for housing, small businesses, infrastructure and community planning.

Position Summary:

Within the GOSR’s Economic Development team, the Program Manager will play a critical role in developing and advancing GOSR’s agenda and supporting the Program. The Program Manager will assist in planning, operations, policy/procedure development and expediting processing the pipeline of applications. The Manager will also complete additional Program tasks as assigned and will work with the Director of Small Business to identify potential Program impediments and develop solutions at the programmatic, local, state and/or federal levels.

Climate Organizing Fellow, Chesapeake Climate Action Network – Virginia

Dates and compensation: 20 hours per week: the positions start on June 15th and end on August 21st.; These positions are unpaid but fellows will receive a weekly travel stipend of $25.

Description: Hampton Roads is ground zero for the climate crisis in Virginia. Coastal Virginia is second only to New Orleans and Louisiana’s Gulf Coast as the largest U.S. population center at greatest risk of flooding due to sea-level rise. We need adapt to the sea level rise we’re already locked into, while investing in Virginia clean energy to reduce the pollution at the heart of the problem.

In the 2015 General Assembly, CCAN introduced an historic piece of legislation that would do just that. The Virginia Coastal Protection Act would generate up to $200 million per year to invest in adaptation measures in Hampton Roads and clean energy statewide, all while lowering emissions of the heat-trapping pollution causing our seas to rise. While we didn’t win in 2015, we built a strong base of support and we’ll be bringing this legislation back in 2016. This summer, we need to capitalize on the momentum we built and lay the groundwork that we need to win. Our Hampton Roads Climate Organizing Fellows will be part of making climate history in Virginia.

Responsibities:

  • Participate in community outreach such as collecting petition signatures, door to door canvassing and phone banking
  • Host events including community activist meetings and climate workshops
  • Help recruit and train new volunteers
  • Help recruit new coastal partners
  • Lobby legislators
  • Conduct campaign related research as needed
  • Conduct data entry as needed

Qualifications:

  • Driving passion to combat climate change, protect coastal Virginia and secure clean energy victories

Position Summary: This position provides administrative and campaign support for the Climate and Energy Program, provides support to the Climate and Energy Program Director (PD), and handles special projects as assigned. The PD oversees strategic development of Rainforest Action Network’s Climate and Energy campaigns, organizes other special projects, ensures funding, administrative and organizational support for RAN’s campaigns, and supervises campaigners. The Program Assistant will provide overall administrative support to the PD for these areas. As a critical member of the Climate and Energy team, this person will have the opportunity to participate in strategic discussions, corporate negotiations, and campaign planning sessions. Beyond meeting the administrative needs of the team, special research projects will be assigned based on the skillset of the selected applicant.

Administrative

  • Track weekly reports and collect agenda items for team check-in meetings;
  • Monitor Program budget, track team spending, maintain fundraising records and participate in development pushes;

Description: Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) is seeking a Summer 2015 Evaluation, Measurement & Verification (EM&V) Forum Intern to work as an integral member of the organization’s team that seeks to support the Regional EM&V Forum, a project launched in 2009 by NEEP to facilitate the development of consistent EM&V savings and reporting protocols across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region for demand-side resources, with an initial focus on energy efficiency resources.

Based in NEEP’s Lexington, Massachusetts office, the Intern works closely with the EM&V Forum Associate and Regional Energy Efficiency Database Manager, and also works with the Forum Director and Senior Research & Evaluation Manager. Responsibilities of the Intern may include research and analyses, project management assistance and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities:

Research and Analyses

  • Track and collect recently completed evaluation studies from the Forum region and update the Forum’s Repository of State & Topical EM&V Studies

Legislative Fellowship, New York State Senate

Description: Each Legislative Fellow is assigned to a specific Senator’s office, where they will function largely as if they were regular staff.  While duties vary depending on the needs of the member, Legislative Fellows generally perform in-depth policy research, take part in meetings with various interest groups and constituents, and attend legislative sessions.

Qualifications: In most cases, Fellows must be full-time matriculated graduate students in an accredited university during the immediate previous spring and fall semesters. Fellowships are open to all Academic Majors. The Biggane Fellow may be a person in midcareer, at the time of application. Biggane applicants need not be currently enrolled in graduate-level study, but must have previous graduate-level experience

How to Apply: Writing samples: The first writing sample is an essay. Any topic is acceptable. The essay may be a paper or portion of a paper previously prepared for a class. The essay should be between 6-10 pages (double-spaced, single-sided 8.5 x 11). The second writing sample is to be a policy proposal (single-spaced, one page). The third writing sample is to be a rebuttal of your policy proposal (single-spaced, one page). The fourth writing sample is your Statement of Purpose. It should be no more than two single-spaced, 8.5 x 11 pages. The Statement should explain why you are applying, what you hope to accomplish, and which fellowship you prefer and why.

Interviews and Selection Interviews will be scheduled during the months of May and June and selections determined in July. Office Placement All office placements are arranged by the Office of Student Programs only. Each Fellow is assigned to a specific office and is expected to function as a regular staff member. While most placements are to the office of an elected member, the Roth, Wiebe, and Biggane placements are made to central staff offices rather than the office of an elected member. The Roth placement is made to the Senate Majority Press Office, the Wiebe placement to the Majority Counsel/Program Services Office, and the Biggane placement to the Senate Finance Committee. Concurrent employment, on-campus obligations, and class work that may conflict with fellowship commitments are prohibited. Upon arrival in September, Fellows participate in an orientation program in addition to regularly scheduled informational forums.

The incumbent will work closely with IUCN staff, principally in Washington D.C. and Toronto, to ensure that preparations (see listed items) for the above mentioned workshop are undertaken efficiently and within budget over the period of May-June 2015.

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead process of organizing workshop logistics for July scheduled Key Biodiversity Assessment Workshop for Canadian Freshwater Biodiversity (Toronto). This primarily includes working with participating experts and IUCN/CI BAU staff to ensure travel and accommodation needs are met within budget.
  2. Work with IUCN staff based in Toronto to establish Canadian Freshwater Biodiversity workshop venue.
  3. Assist in finalizing any post-workshop logistics (final week of internship).
  4. Assist IUCN/CI BAU staff with any pre-workshop species data collection as requested.
  5. Participate as a facilitator in Toronto workshop (week starting 20th of July) if required.
  6. Undertake any other duties as requested by Manager of IUCN/CI BAU within internship period.

Description: This internship program provides an opportunity for students interested in a public policy career to work in a policy research environment.  This internship is funded by the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation. Intern projects are proposed by PPIC researchers and designed around a specific set of tasks and deliverables that can be accomplished within the term of the internship.

Responsibilities: The internship would focus on the initial stages of the project.  In particular, the intern would work with the research team on gathering qualitative and quantitative data relating to drought management, at the local, state, and federal level. This would include working with large datasets as well as participation in interviews and workshops with relevant stakeholders and decision makers.   The intern will also prepare and conduct a presentation summarizing this work to PPIC staff in San Francisco.

Qualifications: The intern for this project should have:

The Research Environment: Interns are offered the opportunity to participate in the collegial atmosphere of PPIC through daily interaction with all aspects of the institution. Under the supervision of the director of the R&D Team, Rod Fujita, the interns will play a vital role in helping to determine which findings from decision science are most robust in creating pro-environmental behaviors. The intern(s) will be assisting in the creation of a comprehensive decision science database, ultimately leading to a publication that examines how decision science can be used to improve environmental campaigns and policy and potential application to a specific ocean conservation initiative (e.g., combatting illegal fishing).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist members of the Research and Development team with research in the field of decision science
  • Reviewing scientific literature related to specific behavioral science principles (such as loss aversion or the use of well-designed defaults)

The Project Manager’s role is three-fold: (1) to be the team lead in working with EDF staff, Council members, and partner organizations to develop and execute strategies to advance the CLC’s goals, (2) to coordinate and manage cross-cutting teams, both internal and external, in support of the CLC’s public events, internal and external communications, publications, and website, and (3) help establish metrics for success of the project and communicate progress toward project goals internally and externally.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the CLC’s success by facilitating strong communication among CLC members, project teams, and stakeholders. This includes articulating project goals and keeping the team in sync on progress and desired results.
  • Develop and apply appropriate means for measuring success.
  • Play an integral role in other activities including fundraising, evaluating and recommending new project ideas; disseminating and communicating project results; and being a team player in the development of a vibrant and entrepreneurial program.
  • Develop and manage relationships with key external stakeholders, subject matter experts, and relevant academic/research communities to generate actions related to project. Coordinate the work of other partner organizations as needed.
  • Develop, launch and evaluate the outcomes of the project to engage academic and other subject matter experts and encourage action/advocacy.
  • Support the CLC and project teams in maintenance of website content and social and traditional media outreach.
  • Represent EDF at meetings with CLC members and partner organizations as needed.
  • Communicate project results to Environmental Defense Fund staff, partners, and other stakeholders through reports, presentations, and other methods.

Qualifications:

  • At least four or more years of related experience, or advanced degree in a related field with at least two years’ related experience
