The U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington, DC-based national nonprofit organization of over 15,000 corporate and organizational members from every sector of the building industry united to transform the building marketplace to sustainability, has a fellowship opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced individual to broaden and accelerate the impact LEED projects have on habitat preservation and land conservation.
The LEED Habitat and Land Conservation Fellow will be responsible for overseeing the continued development of LEED credits rewarding project level activity that enhances off-site habitat and/or contributes to land conservation. This individual will collaborate with credible established land trusts to identify opportunities to expand the use of the current credit, develop new credit structures that channel project level commitments towards high conservation value land, and improve transparency about the contributions of projects to habitat conservation outcomes. The goal of this work is to create a mechanism that aggregates the actions of individual LEED projects and leverages their inherent economies of scale to produce significantly increased overall impact.
This is a one (1) year fellowship with options for follow-on work.
Technical review and analysis:
- Critically review current land protection strategies associated with green building and LEED
- Identify opportunities to expand or enhance the use of the existing habitat protection credit
- Identify opportunities to improve the efficacy of off-site habitat conservation associated with LEED projects
Develop improved strategies:
- Create new credit language that improves connections between LEED projects and investments in high conservation value habitat
- Develop technical guidance to support the use of new or enhanced LEED credits by future projects
- Recruit potential LEED projects to participate in credit development to identify the most appropriate strategies for projects based on the location of project and environmental impact
Outreach and education:
- Convene stakeholder organizations to understand state-of-the-art practice, build collaboration, and facilitate increased off-site habitat preservation
- Outreach at national, regional and local levels to raise awareness about alternative compliance paths to existing LEED credits for habitat and land conservation
- Coordinate, recruit speakers, and build a large audience to build support for off-site habitat preservation through webinars, conferences and other venues
Project Support:
- Provide technical support for the project teams pursuing off-site habitat preservation, including open invitation calls to answer aggregated questions and provide technical assistance
- Bachelor’s degree in related field required
- Master’s degree in related field preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental issues related to green building and habitat conservation.
- Familiarity with relevant land protection programs, such as TNC’s Conservation by Design.
- More than three years of direct experience with private land conservation and land transactions.
- Personal vision for potential connections between green building and habitat conservation
- Excellent written and interpersonal communications skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, engage others as needed and address multiple, inter-related assignments simultaneously subject to deadlines and distractions.
