Overview

The Center for EcoTechnology is seeking qualified college graduate candidates for a one-year paid fellowship position to work with our staff and other EcoFellows to carry out community outreach, school education and other activities related to climate action initiatives and educational programming in western Massachusetts. Activities will support the Center for EcoTechnology’s ongoing programs related to environmental education and energy efficiency, renewable energy, and recycling initiatives for residents, students, institutions and businesses across the region. The Fellowship offers a full orientation and week-long training by CET professionals in subjects related to above programs, as well as hands-on professional development throughout the fellowship. Fellows will be based in one of CET’s Pittsfield, Northampton or Springfield locations, where they will serve communities in the region.

Responsibilities

Community Outreach EcoFellow (based in Northampton)
• Work directly with organization staff to assist communities with outreach and education to residents. Examples of outreach activities include staffing information tables and conducting activities at events, writing articles for community newsletters and case studies for posting on our website, communicating via social media networks and other tasks as needed.
• Assist Center for EcoTechnology staff in coordinating workshops, informational presentations, “eco house parties” and other outreach events.
• Help monitor progress of local campaigns to reduce waste and energy use in households
• Compile case studies of “Eco All Stars” in communities who have successfully implemented energy and money saving practices in their home.
• Help collect baseline energy data for target cities and towns in western Massachusetts.

School and Business Outreach EcoFellow (based in Northampton)
• Support statewide Green Team program for schools, including: administrative support to the program, writing communications to teachers- emails and newsletters, recruiting educators, and providing technical assistance as needed to schools to establish recycling and composting programs.
• Assist our mercury diversion program, providing support to municipalities and hardware retail take back locations and ensuring these locations are stocked with educational materials.
• Support Green Business Specialists to help implement commercial recycling and composting programs and provide subsequent follow up support to these businesses.
• Create signage and other educational materials for businesses schools and institutions.
• Help track and organize actions and accomplishments for internal purposes and funding report
Community Outreach EcoFellow (based in Northampton)
• Develop educational materials and displays for EcoBuilding Bargains store in Springfield. Coordinate efforts of designer and other contractors to finalize information and education showcasing deep energy retrofit and overall mission for customers at our recycled building product store.
• Create an interpretive guide and lead tours as needed for a variety of audiences to engage and educate on them on the energy efficiency of the building as well as how it applies to their own homes.
• Assist in coordinating workshops, informational presentations, and other outreach events as needed.
• Coordinate video case studies documenting “Eco All Stars” in communities who have successfully implemented energy and money saving practices in their home as well as other “deconstruction” and deep retrofit activities.

School and Community Outreach EcoFellow (based in Pittsfield)
• Work directly with organization staff to assist schools with outreach and education to students. Examples of outreach activities include staffing information tables and conducting activities at events, writing articles for school newsletters and case studies for posting on our website, communicating via social media networks and other tasks as needed.
• School-based science and environmental education curriculum assistance and classroom instruction.
• Help conduct classroom and school-wide energy, recycling, climate change and environmental science instruction and activities at schools in western MA.
• Promotion of Green Team program with assistance to increase school enrollment.
• Assist Pittsfield homeowners with energy assessment process, organize community energy education and school-based energy conservation education with a goal of household actions.
• Help organize special events such as the Youth Environmental Summit, Berkshire Environmental Educators Network conference, Junior Solar Sprint and professional development programs as needed.

Community Outreach EcoFellow (based in Pittsfield)
• Work directly with organization staff to assist communities with outreach and education to residents. Examples of outreach activities include staffing information tables and conducting activities at Hazardous Waste collection sites, town transfer stations and community events.
• Assist with the promotion of Household Hazardous Waste collections
• Assist in writing articles for community newsletters and case studies for posting on our website, communicating via social media networks and other tasks as needed.
• Assist Center for EcoTechnology staff in coordinating home composting workshops, Healthy homes, lawns and garden events, informational presentations, and other outreach events.
• Help monitor progress of local campaigns to reduce waste and energy use in households.
• Help promote Recycling Services to local businesses; occasionally assist Recycling Services staff to conduct paper collection at local businesses.

Qualifications

• We are looking for creative and energetic college graduates (bachelor degree required) with an interest in education and outreach and familiarity with issues related to energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies, climate change, recycling and resource conservation. Previous experience through internships and/or professional work is helpful but not required.
• Computer skills required.
• Must have own reliable transportation.
• Commitment to the entire Fellowship program, from mid-August 2012 to mid-July 2013, is required.
• Fellows will work approximately 40 hours per week in this benefited position. Some evening and weekend hours may be needed.
