Organization Overview

To accomplish its mission, the North Carolina Plant Conservation Program (PCP) develops regulations, voluntary programs, and cooperative partnerships to help protect imperiled species and their habitats. PCP’s responsibilities include the listing of North Carolina’s endangered and threatened plant species and the development of conservation programs designed to permanently protect these species.

PCP employs a host of methods and procedures to perpetuate native plants and their ecosystems, including the acquisition and management of important plant sites and habitats.

Description

This position will lead efforts to develop and implement comprehensive management plans for NCDA&CS Plant Conservation Preserves, based on input obtained from program staff, partners, other professionals and through review and evaluation of scientific literature.

Responsibilities

The individual will be expected to maintain detailed records related to each site including plant species information and critical natural resources. The individual is responsible for implementing on-site work activities including fire line installations, prescribed burns, brush removal, invasive plant control, along with extensive physical labor. This individual will be responsible for monitoring to determine the population status of selected rare or keystone plant species, along with determining the response of the plant material to applied management activities. Based on field data, this individual must be able to interpret data and make assessments in regards to progress. This individual must coordinate all work activities with staff, volunteers, and contractors. This individual will be required to assist with communicating the program’s mission and objectives with the state’s citizens.

Qualifications

Required Competencies: This individual must have a working knowledge and background in conservation biology, restoration ecology, forestry, botany, plant taxonomy, rare species biology or related fields. The individual must possess excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to train and supervise staff or volunteers. The individual must have a demonstrated ability to utilize GIS Software, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and various computer software packages including Microsoft Office applications. The individual must possess a high degree of commitment to the program mission and objectives and a willingness to conduct extreme physical labor to complete. Prefer applicant with practical experience in conservation biology, restoration, or plant ecology, forestry or geographical information systems. Course work in rare species biology and plant taxonomy and /or plant identification is beneficial. A individual with demonstrated training and proficiency with MS Office software is also preferred.

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. . . . .

*Note: Career-banded position. To minimally qualify, applicants must meet the training and experience requirements and required competencies. Competencies must be listed on the state application to receive appropriate credit. Environment, Natural Resource and Science job family (Research Branch) has a career-banded compensation plan, which encourages and rewards competency development. Recruitment for this position will target the journey level of the Research Technician. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s competencies, as well the budget, equity and market conditions. For current state employees during the implementation phase of career –banding, this position is considered to be equivalent to salary grade 65. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
