Internship Title: The Student Intern Program

Location: Albany and New York City for summer; various New York State locations during semesters.

Hours and Compensation: 30 hours per week for eight to 10 weeks during the summer; 12 or 13 weeks per semester, for 10 hours per week. Although monetary compensation is not available for student Interns, some colleges and universities may grant academic credit.

The New NY Leaders Initiative is designed to renew the connection between the public and the state and ensure that state government is diverse, talented, and prepared to lead for decades to come. The New New York Leaders Initiative will create opportunities for careers in public service for the state’s next generation.

Description

The Student Intern Program will bring students into state government where they will be exposed to the work of governing and introduced to the increasingly complex policy challenges facing New York State.

The Student Intern Program will attract talented students from undergraduate and graduate programs at colleges and universities throughout New York State. Each intern will be assigned to a particular area within an executive branch agency or department. While providing hands-on program assistance, interns will interact with government leaders and policy-makers.

Qualifications

• Good analytical and evaluative skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Good organizational skills, efficiency and flexibility
• Computer skills, including facility with Microsoft products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), email software, internet searching, and other programs

To be considered for the Student Intern Program, students must be:

• a US Citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
• 18 years of age or older
• a New York State resident or attending a New York State college, university, or graduate program
• a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year College or University (completion of one year’s worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students for participation in the Student Intern Program); or a currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
• have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5

Applicants may come from any academic discipline. Candidates must be available to work at assigned New York State offices. Opportunities are available statewide.

How to Apply

New York State will accept Student Intern Applications in June, November, and March for the fall, spring and summer sessions, respectively. The Application deadline for candidates interested in participating in the Student Intern Program during the fall 2012 semester is July 6, 2012. Applicants who can commit to the internship program for two consecutive semesters will be given priority in the selection process.
