Position Dates (if applicable): The ideal candidate would be available mid-May through the end of August or later, and available to work about 32 hours a week. Work will be a combination of office and field work. Office hours are flexible, and field work hours are scheduled in coordination with our volunteers and the needs of the monitoring projects, requiring occasional weekend work.

Organization Overview

The Merrimack River Watershed Council, Inc. (MRWC) has an opening for a highly motivated, dynamic New Hampshire Water Resources Intern. MRWC is a environmental non-profit based in Lawrence, MA whose mission is o protect, improve and preserve a healthy ecosystem for the mutual well being of the people and wildlife of the Merrimack River Watershed Community through education, advocacy and science.

Description

The NH Water Resources Intern will work under the Project Manager on MRWC’s New Hampshire Water Monitoring Project. This project is a three part program to expand MRWC’s existing Merrimack River Safe Beaches Project into New Hampshire, coordinate MRWC’s Merrimack River Baseline Monitoring Project with the Souhegan Watershed Association’s monitoring program, and develop a Merrimack River Protectors Network. Work will take place throughout the watershed in southern New Hampshire and at the office in Lawrence.

Responsibilities

Roles may include but are not limited to:
• Conduct environmental monitoring and data collection;
• Train and assist volunteers with water quality monitoring;
• Develop partnerships with local environmental groups, businesses and municipalities;
• Public outreach, education and advocacy about water quality and conservation;
• Develop training manuals for water quality monitoring;
• Deliver bacteria samples to EPA lab or analyze bacterial water samples in MRWC’s in-house lab;
• Conduct bacterial analysis of water samples in MRWC’s in-house lab;
• Analyze data to identify basic trends and display on GIS maps;
• Write MRWC press releases and reports.

Qualifications

Education equal to MS in Environmental Science or working toward degree in related field;
• Experience in watershed science and management;
• Must be capable of working independently;
• Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Database and GIS familiarity a plus;
• Must be highly motivated with excellent communication and writing skills;
• Comfortable teaching and interacting with diverse public groups;
• Driver’s license and access to a vehicle required;
• Positive attitude and willingness to work in a variety of field conditions a must.
