Description

The Midwest Regional Biologist will work in the downtown Chicago, IL office and reports to the Director of Field Programs. S/he will be responsible for overseeing and initiating Wildlife at Work programs in the Midwestern states under a cooperative regional growth plan. The position works collaboratively with fellow biologists, managers and directors to handle the volume of programs in other regions when necessary in addition to working closely with the Conservation Education and Outreach department on joint initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform site biodiversity and habitat assessments and prepare reports identifying projects to enhance wildlife value on corporate properties with strong employee and community involvement.
  • Ability to work within an extensive travel schedule and irregular work hours.
  • Identify, solicit, and develop new members for WHC and maintain positive relations with existing members.
  • Identify and secure new corporate locations to include in WHCs Wildlife at Work Program.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations about WHC at business, government, professional, and academic settings to increase visibility and obtain more habitat programs.
  • Prepare articles about the Wildlife Habitat Council for publication.
  • Work as team to produce the annual symposium, workshops, and other activities.
  • Participate in the annual review of programs applying for certification under the Wildlife at Work banner.

Qualifications

Required (R) and Preferred (P) Qualifications

Knowledge, skill and abilities:

(R) Candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently, be a self-starter and have an entrepreneurial attitude. Must also demonstrate excellent communication (verbal and writing) and interpersonal skills.

(R) Computer skills must include MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point), and familiarity with ArcGIS.

Education/training:

(R) Undergraduate degree in a natural science field, or a related field.

(P) Graduate degree in a natural science field, or a related field

Work experience:

(R) The employee must have knowledge of specific or multiple ecosystems in the United States /Canada and must have documented experience with ecological consulting and/or wildlife management plans. (P) Priority will be given to those with corporate experience who can demonstrate an understanding of industry challenges and opportunities in terms of sustainability and stakeholder relations.

Degree of Physical Activity: Light work

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift approximately 20 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to ten pounds. Associated with an essential duty are the following requirements: bending, typing, kneeling, lifting, reaching, prolonged sitting, prolonged standing, close visual inspection, walking (prolonged, in any weather and up to six consecutive hours).

Physical / Environmental Conditions: subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold and extreme noise.
