Organization Overview

Program of the chemical modification of natural products within the Center for Applied Research and Technology Development, Natural Resources Research Institute focuses on development conversion methods that will enable industry to commercially produce “green” industrial feed stocks (platform chemicals) and “green” materials from bio-based feedstock including peat, wood, and grass.

Description

The Natural Resources Research Institute is a research facility with the mission to foster the economic development of Minnesota’s natural resources in an environmentally sound manner to promote private sector employment. Research studies include applied research and technology development in the areas of forest products, forestry, minerals, peat, and chemical extractives. Environmental research includes water and land resources, environmental chemistry, education and outreach.

Responsibilities

60% effort – Execute experimental protocols using analytical instruments including the gas-chromatography/mass-spectroscopy, the ionic chromatograph, the high performance liquid chromatograph, the atomic absorption instrument, and the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) machine.

10% effort – Collect research data, record it in the laboratory notebook and prepare reports to summarize research results.

5% effort – Supervise undergraduate students during the day-to-day lab operations.

10% effort – Assist program manager in ordering laboratory chemicals and supplies.

15% effort – Conduct other miscellaneous organizational support activities as identified by the program manager.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
B.S. degree in chemistry or related field to include laboratory experience; or education in chemistry field and laboratory work experience totaling at least four (4) years in combination. Must be familiar with instrumental analytical techniques, have experience with Microsoft Office products including (but not limited to) MSWord, PowerPoint and Excel and the successful candidate should have experience to execute experimental protocols in the area of chemistry and preparing internal reports.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. degree in chemistry or/and experience in fields related to area of natural product, chemistry of wood, cellulose, lignin, humic acids, chemistry of peat, ion-exchange resins, treatment of waste water by chemical means. Experience with instrumentation gas-chromatography/mass-spectroscopy, ionic chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, atomic absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
