Organization Overview

Established in 1949, Camp Grady Spruce is the resident camp of the YMCA of Dallas.

Camaraderie, joy, lifelong friendship and memories are created along the shores of stunning Possum Kingdom Lake. Campers fall asleep under a brilliant star filled sky and wake to the sun rising over the lake.

Camp is more than just natural beauty and activities. It is a place where kids reach beyond what they think they can do, learn to live in community, appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of each other and experience the atmosphere and example of Christian living so that they might grow in self-esteem.

Description

YMCA Camp Grady Spruce seeks highly motivated Educators with a natural love for the outdoors and teaching for it’s incredible Outdoor Education Program. YMCA Camp Grady Spruce is located on 535 pristine acres on the shores of beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake in North Central Texas and serves thousands of 4th/5th graders from the Dallas/Fort Worth area and beyond.

Responsibilities

Duties: Leading trail lessons and activities such as: Lake Ecology, Astronomy/Star Lab, Devil’s Island, Geology, Toast Burning, Prairie Ecology, Johnson’s Peak, Night Hikes, Texas Time Trail, Man and Environment, Orienteering, Fishing, Outdoor Living Skills, Horsemanship, Raccoon Circles, Sensory Awareness, Archery, Path to Verse, Conservation Projects and Low Ropes. Just to name a few. Hand’s on education at it’s finest!

Other Duties: Evening programs, program maintenance, school visits, professional/peer development, rangeland fire management, nesting box programs, field trips throughout north central Texas, regional conferences, repurposed construction projects, weather watchers, sustainable program development, Adopt-A-Highway, Possum Kingdom lake community involvement, staff training, school meetings and teacher workshops. Become a better teacher while healing the social landscape! It’s a lot of fun as well!

Qualifications

Qualifications: BS/BA in Education, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Recreation, Ecology, Forestry, Biology, Outdoor Education, or related field. Interest and desire to become part of the Camp Grady Spruce key leadership team and teach elementary age students about the environment in a non-traditional setting. Previous teaching experience is a plus but is also a great place to start! Applicants need to be comfortable with social settings, tempo teaching, public speaking, gregarious teaching techniques and facilitating conversations that will lead students to a better understanding of the natural world.
