Description

The Great Lakes Aquatic Species Policy Intern provides research, review, and recommendations to the Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Director and Policy Manager. This may include organizing and maintaining contact lists, meeting preparations, research on public policy, regulatory approaches and other issues related to the work of The Nature Conservancy.

The successful applicant will be expected to compile and review relevant state and provincial legislation, and primary research documents. They will be required to interview agency managers and draft a policy white paper in consultation with The Nature Conservancy’s Great Lakes Aquatic Invasive Species Director and policy manager.

Responsibilities

Summarize current regulatory approaches governing trailer boat usage and transportation of AIS in each Great Lake state and provinces.
Review alternative compliance rules or offence provisions that have been adopted across North America
search and review studies that provides measures of the management impact or effectiveness of trailer boat offence provisions.
Develop recommendation on best practices.
Determine regulatory processes required to revise state and provincial legislation across the Great Lakes in order to institute a standardized and consistent regulatory approach to the management of trailered boat pathway, based on an agreed best practice.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree or certification (in progress or completed) or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience in general office support and clerical services.
Experience writing and editing general correspondence.
Experience coordinating multiple projects.
Experience using MS Office, Word, Excel and navigating the Internet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree or certification (in progress or completed) and 0-1 year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities. Meet deadlines.
Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, and Excel. May require database management skills with ability to produce reports. Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet.
Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.

Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
The position will involve some travel possibly including the occasional overnight trip.
