Description

For the last four years Friends of the Earth has been advocating for international forest conservation policies that protect the rights of indigenous peoples and traditional forest dwellers while upholding high environmental safeguards. We have sought to reform REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) policies, particularly with respect to upholding environmental and social safeguards; to resist market-based mechanisms for forest conservation, and to focus policymaker attention on the drivers of deforestation.

We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to lead our campaign on international forests. This position can be based in either of Washington DC or San Francisco office and will work with partner groups from around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic campaign plans in conjunction with Program Directors on REDD;
  • Develop and implement strategic campaign plans in conjunction with Program Directors targeting   international and US specific drivers of deforestation.
  • Represent Friends of the Earth US on the Friends of the Earth International Forest and Biodiversity Campaign Steering Group, and within other relevant networks and coalitions;
  • Conduct research and analysis to publish reports and articles;
  • Develop public education and campaign materials;
  • Educate policymakers, media, allies and the public;
  • Work with the Economic Policy Director and Director of Foundation Relations to develop and implement a fundraising plan.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years experience in environmental advocacy

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience in international forest advocacy strongly preferred
  • Strategic approach to both policy and politics
  • Ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research
  • Ability to effectively reach out to the media
  • Ability to lead and work in coordination with a diverse group of coalition partners
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fundraising experience a plus
