Overview

Southern Alliance for Clean Energy is seeking a qualified individual who will assist SACE with utility and energy policy reform in the Southeast with a particular focus on reducing the region’s dependence on coal power.

Description

General Job responsibilities:

  • Researching and cataloguing environmental, economic and financial data related to coal power and regional utilities and analyzing this information
  • Managing and coordinating federal and state coal policy engagement and litigation
  • Communicating with media, individuals and utilities
  • Organizing and carrying out new and ongoing campaigns surrounding select coal plants and regional utilities
  • Reviewing and analyzing state and federal environmental policy
  • Coordinating and collaborating with allied organizations

Responsibilities

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing and assisting with ongoing campaigns related to coal plants and regional utilities including collaboration on legal, grassroots and media campaigns
  • Managing, updating and expanding, as necessary, database of regional coal plants and analysis of this data including representational mapping
  • Identifying opportunities to take action to help achieve closure of certain regional coal plants
  • Researching opportunities for policy engagement and litigation in collaboration with allies
  • Working with experts in engineering, human health, regulatory, financial and other relevant fields to understand all opportunities for coal retirement and utility reform and to clearly communicate expert knowledge
  • Coordinating region-wide coal ash clean-up project including work with numerous regional and national allies, tracking coal ash policy, managing comprehensive coal-ash website and database, researching state-level data on coal ash ponds and coal ash contamination sites
  • Conducting general outreach to SACE membership, public, utilities, traditional and untraditional allies and increasing SACE’s membership base in strategic areas
  • Organizing internet-based outreach for web initiatives (i.e. blog postings, website development)
  • Representing the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy in coalitions, working groups, meetings and government hearings
  • Preparing written materials for various audiences including technical papers, fact sheets, blogs and press releases
  • Assisting with planning for events and strategic community outreach opportunities
  • Developing campaign strategies and materials, grant reports and proposals to support the campaign work.

Qualifications

Candidates must be committed to moving the Southeast off coal-fired power and to support clean energy alternatives. Candidates should work well individually and in groups, should have excellent writing, research, and oral communications skills and a capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Excel or other database programs and must be capable of researching, cataloguing, managing and analyzing environmental, financial and other coal-plant and utility-related data. Leadership and strategic campaign skills desired. Outstanding attention to detail is essential. A Bachelors degree is required and a J.D. or other legal experience is preferred. Candidates should have an understanding of domestic energy issues, a sense of the energy dynamics in the Southeast and general knowledge on clean energy opportunities for the region. Ability to work in challenging, fast-paced and often adversarial conditions is a must.
