Golisano Institute for Sustainability is one of the nation’s leading research centers in the burgeoning field of sustainability, focusing on systems level education and research in sustainable production systems, sustainable mobility, alternative energy systems, Eco-IT, and sustainable built environments. The organization conducts over $13M of externally sponsored research per annum in these areas.GIS consists of ten tenured or tenure track faculty, 5 research faculty, 60 professional staff of scientists, engineers and administrative support personnel, along with more than 20 extended faculty from across the university. Academic programs within the department are the Sustainability Ph.D. and Sustainable Systems M.S. A Master of Architecture Program with a sustainability focus is also offered in partnership with RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.Current facilities consist of a 170,000 sq. ft. research, education, and conference center housing the Center for Sustainable Mobility, National Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery, Center for Sustainable Production Systems, the NanoPower Research Laboratories, and the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute. Additionally, construction of an 83,000 sq. ft. research building will be completed in October 2012.

Description
Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester NY) invites applications for the position of Department Head. The successful candidate will be a leading expert in an area related to sustainable production systems, sustainable mobility, alternative energy, Eco-IT and will have experience in establishing strong partnerships with universities, industry, and national labs.
S/he will be responsible for leading multidisciplinary faculty in the operation of GIS’ Sustainability Ph.D. and Sustainable Systems M.S.; growing the program’s research portfolio; hiring and mentoring faculty and staff; and creating a supportive and stimulating environment for graduate students. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree and possess qualifications to be tenured at the associate or full professor level.
This position reports to the GIS Director, who also serves as Assistant Provost.

Qualifications
- Education: PhD or equivalent earned doctoral degree in the natural sciences, engineering, economics, or business.
- Teaching Experience: At least seven years of teaching experience at the graduate level.
- Advising:Advising multiple doctoral dissertations, as major advisor, in sustainable production systems (the design, manufacture, and distribution of goods that employ processes that are non-polluting; conserving of energy and natural resources; economically viable; and safe and healthful for workers, communities, and consumers), alternative energy systems (specifically fuel cell technology, biofuel synthesis, photovoltaic systems, energy systems analysis, systems-level technical and economic analysis), sustainable mobility (propulsion systems based on renewable energy sources, and emerging mobil energy storage technologies), or Eco-IT (information technologies and products that offer reductions in environmental impact).
- Research: An established funded research program and experience leading multidisciplinary academic research teams in sustainable production systems, sustainable mobility, alternative energy systems, or Eco-IT as defined above.
- Leadership: Experience leading faculty in the development and governance of graduate programs, including curriculum development, student recruitment, student mentoring, program implementation, and program review.
