Organization Overview
SENS is known for interdisciplinary education, research, and knowledge translation, as well as innovative teaching and curriculum design. We house three graduate programs in environment and sustainability, and offer a vibrant atmosphere for graduate student and post-doctoral fellow research and training. SENS facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations at and beyond the U of S. The School has faculty affiliated with the Global Institute for Water Security, funded by the Canada Excellence Research Chair Program, the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, and the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development as well as the internationally-renowned U of S Toxicology Centre. The potential for collaboration exists with emerging research centres including the Global Institute for Food Security, the Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation, and the Sustainability Education Research Institute.
Description
The School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS), a priority initiative at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in sustainability science. SENS seeks a faculty member whose research and scholarly interests in sustainability deal with the interactions between social and natural systems, and how those interactions define and influence sustainability as a societal goal. The ideal candidate will demonstrate how they apply social science methodologies to meeting the needs of present and future generations while advancing human dignity and conserving the planet’s life-support systems. The U of S offers a unique platform for sustainability research, with established research strengths and investments in sustainability and natural resource management, support for multiple approaches to understanding the interdependence of ecology and the lived environment in a cross-cultural social context, and Saskatchewan’s expanding natural resource sector. The successful candidate will join a supportive interdisciplinary team working across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and physical sciences.
Qualifications
The focus on sustainability science will move SENS’ vision forward by strengthening our explicit focus on sustainability as a key societal goal. Competitive candidates will focus on some of the following aspects we associate with sustainability including, but not limited to, transitional economic and social strategies, risk assessment and management, indigenous rights, green building/LEED or other certification processes, urban ecology, urban metabolism, energy flows and/or smart growth. Cross-disciplinary emphasis on or experience with the social sciences is required. This exciting new hire will also play a key role in the development and implementation of an undergraduate certificate in sustainability. As such, the successful candidate will be familiar with program design and implementation, and will facilitate connections between SENS and undergraduate environmental programs at the University of Saskatchewan. Requirements also include a PhD in a relevant area of re-search, the appropriate level of national or international recognition for stage of career, and a strong record of attracting competitively awarded research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) or a similar national granting agency. Experience with a suite of qualitative or quantitative methods of analysis will be considered an asset. A proven track record of graduate and undergraduate teaching and research supervision is required, as is experience in developing interdisciplinary research partnerships and approaches involving graduate students.
