Hours, Compensation & Benefits: Honam Sea Grant will provide a ₩1,800,000 stipend (~$1,600), round-trip travel expenses to Korea, accommodations in Mokpo, and weekday lunches.

Organization Overview: 

The Korean Honam Sea Grant Program at Mokpo Maritime University (MMU) is launching a pilot program wherein M.S. and Ph.D. candidates or recent graduates of American Universities are invited to apply for a five week teaching fellowship involving one week of orientation and four instructional weeks during the summer of 2013. The collaborative United States – Korea Sea Grant Junior Ocean Science Camp enables U.S. scientists in a Master’s Degree program or higher the opportunity to impart their knowledge to Korean students in classroom and outdoor field settings with support from Honam Sea Grant personnel.
Description: 

Junior Ocean Science Camp instructors will provide classroom instruction and lead English language field tours imparting basic concepts of marine and estuarine ecology, and the biology of fish and invertebrates in Korea. Target audiences are elementary school age students in Grades 4-6, and Sea Grant staff.

The Junior Ocean Science Camp serves a dual purpose of providing English language exposure and marine science education to young students and Sea Grant staff.

Responsibilities:

Teach two one-hour sessions four days/week and weekly 1/2 day field tours.

Qualifications:

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of marine science, fisheries biology, and estuarine ecology
  • Demonstrated teaching ability
  • M.S. or Ph.D. candidates or recent graduates of American universities
  • Interest in sailing and ability to teach small boat handling is highly desirable.
