The group’s work is focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems:
- Transition to a clean energy economy from one based primarily on the burning of fossil fuels.
- The erosion of large wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world’s remaining biodiversity.
- The destruction of the world’s marine environment, with a particular emphasis on global fisheries.
Global Ocean Legacy is a project of the Pew Environment Group that works to protect and conserve some of the Earth’s most important and unspoiled marine ecosystems through the establishment of very large, highly protected marine reserves. Since 2005, Global Ocean Legacy has been instrumental in securing the full protection of almost 1.5 million square kilometres of the globe’s most spectacular seascapes, including more than half of the highly protected no-take marine reserves now in place worldwide. Our efforts, working with national and local governments, locally-based conservation organizations and indigenous people to help build public support for marine reserves, have led to the designation of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (US), the Chagos Marine Reserve (UK) in the Indian Ocean — the largest no-take marine reserve in the world — and the recent announcement by the Australian government of a half million square kilometer marine park in the Coral Sea. Currently, project staff is working to achieve the designation of some of the largest potential marine reserves in the world in the Kermadec Islands, Easter Island, Bermuda, the Pitcairn Islands, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and are investigating additional sites in the French overseas territories. The Global Ocean Legacy project is one of seven campaigns that fit within the Pew Environment Group’s International Ocean Conservation program.
Description:
The Program Director, Global Ocean Legacy, is responsible for the overall management, and successful completion of the on-the-ground project site efforts to establish very large, no-take marine reserves. Individual marine reserve sites are currently underway in eight political jurisdictions. Each will take from two to six years to complete and are directly managed by in-country staff. The Program Director is responsible for general oversight, strategic direction, and ultimate success of these sites and their in-country staff. The position will directly supervise five directors and be broadly responsible for the eight projects currently underway.
This position is part of the Global Ocean Legacy management team within the Pew Environment Group, and reports to the Project Director, Global Ocean Legacy. The position is located in Washington DC. It is expected that this position is for a term period through June 30, 2017, with the possibility of an extension pending the success of the program, funding sources and board decisions on continued support.
Responsibilities:
- Exercise management responsibility over staff implementing Global Ocean Legacy marine reserve projects.
- Ensure consistency across GOL projects and serve as an interface among project site directors to help cross-pollinate ideas, strategies and tactics.
- Provide overall strategic vision for sites consistent with Pew Environment Group and Global Ocean Legacy goals and objectives.
- Represent the Trusts publicly by participating in conferences, seminars and official forums, public speaking, as well as authoring articles for newspapers, magazines and/or peer reviewed journals.
- Advocate for GOL projects as required with scientists, colleagues, and public officials and work with donors and potential donors as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain a broad knowledge of the science and politics of marine reserves globally, other Pew Environment Group projects, and ocean conservation issues broadly.
- Help interview and hire staff for individual projects.
- Determine when projects are at risk of not meeting their goals, identify the causes and, when needed, take appropriate steps to fix the problem. Monitor the progress of ongoing projects and prepare regular oral and written summaries.
- Report to senior management within PEG on the progress, problems and outlook for individual GOL projects.
- Ensure all project work is carried out consistent with Pew policies, guidelines and protocols and maintain appropriate management and control systems for contracts, grants, donor relations, reporting and legal review.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in conservation, science, law, or public policy or equivalent experience preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience required.
- A broad understanding of environmental issues and particularly marine issues both in the US and internationally.
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills. Ability to synthesize information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
- Able to set short- and longer-term planning goals in line with project management. Experience managing contracts regarding deliverables, deadlines and financial elements.
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to independently develop and move projects.
- Ability to design cost effective budgets and monitor campaign expenses, evaluating project costs, and identify capacity needs, including hiring new staff and consultants to ensure the campaign has the necessary resources to achieve its goals.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues and means to address them. Strong oral, presentation, facilitation, and written communication skills such that complex ideas, thoughts and concepts are clearly articulated for a general audience.
- Seasoned judgment, able to make decisions, justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
- Fluency in English required
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, donors, partners, and others who contribute to the development of a project. Excellent listening skills.
