Organization Overview:
The Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES) is an independent non-profit organization that engages stakeholders to deliver technically sound solutions to complex environmental and health problems – without unwanted side effects.
Description:
IES is seeking enthusiastic graduate interns to join our project team for The Tree Project or the Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CEC) Project. The Tree Project’s mission is to improve the environment of Colorado’s urban areas through tree selection and management. The CEC Project seeks to use education and community-based social marketing to mitigate and prevent the introduction of household and personal care contaminants to the downstream water supply.
Responsibilities:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support technical and program work in all phases of the current and upcoming projects
- Conduct independent background research on various environmental issues including emerging contaminants (sources, human and wildlife health effects, mitigation, treatment, and policy) and the environmental, social, and economic benefits of trees
- Participate in technical research, statistical analysis, stakeholder meetings, community workshops, educational programs, and project design, implementation, and evaluation
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, write, edit, and submit grant proposals to support project work
- Assist with the development and distribution of marketing materials
- Help build and maintain the IES mailing list
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, detail-oriented graduate student or college graduate who is passionate about protecting the environment! Excellent writing, verbal, presentation, research, and organizational skills are required. Interns must have the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively in a team-oriented environment. Completed studies in technical areas such as environmental science, chemistry, biology, engineering, urban planning, health, economics, or nonprofit management are desired.
Other Details:
This is a part-time internship (15-20 hours/week) with a flexible schedule. Interns work independently at home and participate in weekly team meetings and scheduled events in the Denver area. This is an unpaid internship. Successful interns will have the opportunity to apply for a paid position after 150 hours. Interns will be encouraged to apply IES work to academic courses with support from IES professional staff members and Board members. IES does not have a central office. Interns work independently, and participate in Institute and Project meetings in Denver.
