The American Geophysical Union is an international non-profit scientific association with over 61,000 members. Established in 1919 as a committee within the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, AGU was independently incorporated in 1972. Since its founding, AGU is dedicated to furthering the sciences of geophysics through the individual efforts of our members and in cooperation with other national and international scientific organizations. These goals are met through publishing scientific journals and other technical publications, sponsoring scientific meetings of various sizes throughout the year and a variety of other educational and scientific activities. Our headquarters are conveniently located just north of Washington’s Dupont Circle.

We’re looking for an Intern that’s a smart, forward-thinking student or recent college graduate to join our class team of people in our Outreach Division who are passionate about what they do.
Public Affairs maintains a continuous flow of information between AGU scientists and Capitol Hill. The department advocates on behalf of Earth and space science as related policy evolves in Congress. The Public Affairs Intern will work closely with Public Affairs and Outreach staff. This internship provides an opportunity to learn the public policy process first-hand and to gain knowledge about Earth and space science issues, including climate change, natural resources, space policy, and natural hazards. This is a paid internship in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
The intern will attend Congressional hearings and briefings that relate to Earth and space science policy and write articles for the AGU website, AGU’s weekly membership newsletter Eos, and other publications. The intern will also assist with AGU members’ Congressional visits and with organizing Congressional briefings and receptions. The internship also includes social media outreach and web presence, and administrative tasks, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Good online research, excellent writing, and organizational skills are a must. Coursework related to Earth or space science, political science, and communications are a plus.
