Hours & Compensation: Unpaid, although a subsidy is offered to offset commute costs.

Organization Overview:

The EPA smart growth program helps communities improve their development practices and get the type of development they want. We work with local, state, and national experts to discover and encourage successful, environmentally sensitive development strategies.

Description:

Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, support technical assistance efforts in states and communities, develop tools, and gain insight into environmental policymaking and planning. Interns may assist with research and writing of briefing papers, reports, and presentations; document review; communications activities; and/or analytical and logistical tasks.

Responsibilities:

OSC is seeking a summer intern to assist with research and writing of briefing papers, reports, and presentations; document review; and/or analytical and logistical tasks. Topics could include financing for sustainable infrastructure investments; green building and sustainable design; mapping and metrics to determine the location efficiency for development; local and regional economic development; project financing for transit-oriented development; quantification of the environmental and economic benefits of sustainable development and smart growth; rural sustainable development approaches; and/or climate mitigation and adaptation. The intern will work directly with OSC staff and in some cases colleagues and counterparts throughout EPA and other federal agencies.

Qualifications:

OSC is seeking candidates that possess superior oral and written communication skills; are quick learners; demonstrate strong analytic skills in reviewing and collecting information; and work well in a fluid, dynamic environment. Knowledge of sustainable development/smart growth and/or land use/environmental planning issues is highly desired.
