Description:

The HOW (Healing Our Waters) Campaign Director is responsible for directing a multi-million dollar, multi-organization campaign to obtain policies and funding to restore the Great Lakes. The director’s responsibilities include designing campaign strategy; building and maintaining a broad coalition; managing and following the directives of a multi-organization steering committee; coordinating media, grassroots, and policy activities by dozens of organizations; fostering relationships with key funders; and managing campaign staff. This campaign is expected to last 5 years or more and is operated in partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association.

Responsibilities:

Lead a regional coalition of conservation, environmental, and other organizations (the “Great Lakes Coalition.” With the HOW Governance Board, design the national strategy for winning policies and funding for Great Lakes restoration. Ensure that the campaign plan is implemented strategically and effectively through the work of HOW campaign staff and the efforts of organizations in the coalition. Coalition leadership will involve:

  • Designing (with appropriate consultants and partners) and implementing an effective media strategy;
  • Designing and implementing grassroots actions;
  • Bringing in new coalition partners;
  • Coordinating, and when appropriate conducting, high-level advocacy collaboratively with NPCA.
  • Coordination of the coalition’s Governance Board of regional, state and national organizations. The Board will establish campaign plans and budgets for the national and regional campaigns to achieve Great Lakes restoration policies and funding.
  • Coordination of the coalition’s science advisory committee, which will provide technical guidance to the steering committee, the coalition, and the advocacy efforts.
  • Planning and convening meetings of these committees and other leaders of the coalition.
  • Working with Governance Board members to foster their organizations’ robust involvement with Great Lakes restoration issues.
  • Coordinate closely with national NWF staff to ensure that regional and national campaigns are integrated and cohesive.
  • Work with other NWF Departments (Communications, Magazines, EnviroAction, Membership, Education, etc) to assure regional restoration-related efforts are coordinated and understood internally and, when appropriate, key Great Lakes information is communicated to external audiences beyond the Great Lakes community.
  • Advise NWF senior leadership on national restoration agenda.
  • With Governance Board and staff participation, raise money from key funders to enhance the Great Lakes restoration campaign and ensure that appropriate grant reporting is completed.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • B.S/B.A Degree. Advanced degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least 10 years experience required in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns, grassroots organizing, media, and environmental advocacy.
  • Familiarity and good reputation with Great Lakes conservation community essential.

SKILLS:

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Strong strategic planning and program implementation skills with the ability drive a project forward through organizational and political barriers.
  • Must be able to use good judgment to make quick decisions in a rapidly changing political landscape.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite 2007/2010); experience with internet, list serves, and other databases.
