Organization Overview:
Oceana, an international conservation organization dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans, is seeking a Washington, DC-based Grassroots Campaign Manager to manages grassroots components of a campaign to stop expanded offshore oil and gas drilling and to promote offshore wind.
Description:
The Grassroots Campaign Manager is primarily responsible for leading an effort to build public engagement on offshore drilling and renewable energy, plays a leading role in campaign development and takes lead responsibility for specific projects within the pollution campaign. With direction from the Campaign Director, coordinates the day to day work of a grassroots organizing team in defining and executing elements of their campaign plans; helps to ensure that the team makes effective decisions; works collaboratively, and carries out the tasks necessary to meet campaign objectives. The Campaign Manager tracks timelines, and reports on progress to the Campaign Director. Manages a varied and high volume workload and takes initiative to work to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks. Position requires some travel, and extensive internal and external contacts.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a detailed national grassroots organizing plan to engage the public and leverage elected decision-makers. The plan will be structured to include both long-term and short-term goals, objectives, resource needs, explanations of how activities will be conducted, quantitative measures of progress, and timelines. The plan will be focused around a federal policy goal.
- Manage a broad, effective field campaign including, but not limited to, grassroots coalition building, earned and paid media acquisition, legislative advocacy, science, public engagement, repeat volunteerism, scaling volunteer effort, and development of a continuing and self-sustaining foundation of support.
- Coordinate the execution of the campaign in conjunction with a team of professionals. This will include working with field staff, on-line activists, legislative and communications professionals, scientists, vendors, consultants and others.
- Inject creativity and persistence to develop a campaign story that motivates people to engage and paints a positive picture of Oceana’s work.
- Regularly report on progress of the campaign, and lead the charge for overcoming obstacles to ensure goals and objectives are met.
- Perform additional duties as needed and/or assigned.
- Supervises a diverse and geographically spread out team of campaign organizers, in addition to volunteers and interns. Also coordinates other activities being carried out by Oceana staff related to the campaign, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of campaign experience, with at least two in a management position. This should include experience engaging volunteers and building a foundation of support for a policy outcome. The ideal candidate has managed remote campaign organizers.
- Demonstrated success building and cultivating new relationships in a way that persuades individuals to support the organization’s agenda and generates measurable results.
- A proven track record in coalition building, grassroots or field campaign organizing, environmental issue advocacy, and public speaking.
- Experience in coordinating media relations.
- A track record of being detail oriented, with good organizational skills and follow-through, including the quantitative tracking of campaign deliverables – “goals to actuals.
- Demonstrated initiative to self-motivate, to work with diverse communities, serve as a team leader, and set and achieve Oceana’s goals.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to multi-task.BS or BA in Environmental Policy, Political Science or related degree from an accredited 4 year university. Masters degree a plus.
- Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.
- An ability to work well with others.
Minimum Work Requirements:
Knowledge: Some knowledge of the issue that is the subject of the campaign is desirable but not necessary. Experience working in a campaign context with the media, policymakers and grassroots advocacy.
Experience: Experience in an environmental issue advocacy campaign and/or political campaign is necessary. Candidates for this position should have relevant professional experience, including but not limited to, working in political, policy, legal or government settings. Must have experience with public interest advocacy, public interest campaigns, public affairs, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
Skills and Abilities: Proven ability to coordinate with members of a professional staff, ensure project completion, juggle multiple competing demands for time, and direct complex activities. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Strong commitment to mission, goals, and values of Oceana.
