Position Title: Research Intern

Location: Washington DC

Hours & Compensation: Applicants must be able to commit to at least 10 – 12 weeks of full-time work this fall between September and December. Exact dates are flexible. A part-time internship is also negotiable for qualified applicants currently in school, with a minimum commitment of 15 hours/week. Unpaid.

Organization Overview:

The Center for Responsible Travel is a non-profit research institution whose mission is to design, monitor, evaluate, and improve ecotourism and sustainable tourism practices and principles. Its policy-oriented research focuses on ecotourism and responsible travel as a tool for poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation, as well as socially and environmentally responsible tourism practices.

Description:

Assist with the research for Executive Director Martha Honey’s forthcoming book on coastal tourism! You’ll be responsible for research on issues such as climate change, cruise tourism, and destination biodiversity.

This is the perfect position for someone who is looking to expand their knowledge of responsible and sustainable tourism, and to engage in rigorous, in-depth research on both underlying and topical issues facing the tourism industry.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather and analyze research related to responsible tourism
  • Conduct research specifically on coastal tourism
  • Assist in some administrative tasks

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills, and able to work well with others
  • Creative, flexible, and organized
  • Spanish fluency an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Excellent writing abilities
  • Prior research experience

Previous academic and/or field experience with responsible/ecotourism is recommended, but definitely not required! These internships are open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates only. Recent graduates are also welcome. Individuals will be responsible for arranging their own housing in Washington, DC.
