Position Title: Deputy Director
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Hours and Compensation: The Deputy Director will work closely with the Director, the Board, and with Protecting Our Waters volunteers. The Deputy Director will be primarily responsible for raising her or his salary, which will be smaller than that for a comparable position in the private sector. The position will start at 20 hours a week with the intention of transitioning to full-time depending on the Deputy Director’s performance and fundraising.

Description
As a maturing environmental organization, Protecting Our Waters seeks a Deputy Director who will help professionalize it and build its capacity, as well as assume many responsibilities now attended to by the Director, Iris Marie Bloom, to whom the Deputy Director will report.
Responsibilities
These responsibilities span the breadth of Protecting Our Waters’ work, and include, among others:
- Financial management, including budgeting, accounting, and banking
- Outreach and organizing centered in Philadelphia but also across the Marcellus Shale region
- Office management, all aspects
- Non-profit corporate compliance
- Volunteer development, including increasing the number and depth of involvement of volunteers, and organizing their efforts towards particular campaigns and organizational goals
- Building and maintaining social media presence
- Participating on behalf of Protecting Our Waters in various local, regional, and national coalitions
- Fundraising, including grant writing, donor development, and special events
- Public relations, website development, and publications
- Public speaking
- Mounting proactive and responsive campaigns around fracking / shale gas infrastructure issues
- Press and communications, including issuing press releases, connecting press to individuals on the ground, and generating letters to the editor
Qualifications
The Deputy Director position will be fast-paced, rewarding, stressful, at times tedious, at times invigorating. It will require a person devoted to the cause of protecting human and animal health, and the natural environment, from environmental destruction.
Applicants must also have the following qualifications:
- Proven effective managerial experience
- Organizational development and grant writing skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, both one-on-one and as a team member
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- A history of environmental and/or social change organizing and/or activism
- Proven fundraising and financial management experience

- Be highly professional and organized
- Be highly motivated, dynamic, creative, and energizing
- Follow through on their endeavors and take responsibility for the results
