Organization Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 430 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Livingston, Montana and Beijing.

NRDC’s Urban Solutions program brings together experts from a variety of fields – energy, water, transportation, food, community development and innovative finance – to develop and deploy proven strategies that address important environmental problems and help ensure that cities and metropolitan regions are as clean, vital and inclusive as possible. Urban Solutions works with on-the-ground public, private and non-profit partners where there is an opportunity to implement policies that unlock the market for new investment in building energy efficiency, green neighborhood development and regional land use and mobility strategies that reduce the harmful impacts of sprawl and support economically strong and sustainable communities.

“Scaling Up Energy Efficiency in Affordable Housing” is a partnership among NRDC, the Energy Foundation and the National Housing Trust (NHT) which seeks to significantly increase and improve investment by utilities in affordable, multifamily housing through effective energy efficiency programs by utilities, and to ensure that owners of affordable multifamily buildings have access to these programs and access to energy consumption data and other measures, resulting in reduced energy expenditures, improved quality of life, and reduced power plant pollution. This national effort will involve building an effective national network among energy efficiency and affordable housing advocates and practitioners, engage in up to 12 states to increase utility funding for energy efficiency in affordable multi-family housing, and engage and educate building owners and operators of affordable multi-family buildings to grow the demand for enhanced utility programs.
