Our theory of change involves building reef resilience by working with communities to identify and solve local conservation challenges that undermine reef health. CORAL has set an aggressive vision for growth and increased conservation action throughout this decade to meet the serious threats affecting coral reef ecosystems and the human communities they support.

Description:

CORAL is seeking an experienced and resourceful individual to join our field team in the role of Hawai’i Field Representative (HFR). The CORAL HFR will be based on Maui or Hawaiʿi Island and will work closely with the Hawai’i Field Manager and other program staff to support CORAL’s mission. She/he will assist with program planning, outreach, and logistical support for the implementation of deliverables outlined in project and grant work plans.

Responsibilities:

The HFR will also participate in the strategic planning for execution of Hawai’i program objectives and will be involved in the communications with stakeholders and high-level decision makers. The position will involve developing collaborations across interest groups and government officials, which will include navigating a challenging and often contentious political climate, to advance CORAL’s goals and project objectives.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

The Hawai’i Field Representative will be a professional with a MA/MS degree in a relevant social or natural science, with at least three years of related experience in marine resource management, policy, or marine conservation. The position will require someone with the ability to manage day-to-day activities as well as strategize solutions to complex conservation dilemmas. This will involve applying resource management concepts and tools, alongside CORAL procedures and local cultural context. Additionally, the individual will need to compile and synthesize project data to resolve disparities and modify processes to solve problems. In order to achieve this, the candidate will need to know how to interpret guidelines, evaluate information, and modify processes to adapt to changing circumstances. The HRF should therefore ideally possess the following professional experiences and personal attributes:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working within Hawai’i’s natural systems and knowledge of island ecosystem principles
• Knowledge and awareness of, and experience working with and promoting, Hawaiian cultural practices within a resource conservation context
• Experience in outreach and organizing in a community setting and multicultural context, as well as experience facilitating workshops
• Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and ability to complete tasks independently and efficiently and manage multiple and diverse projects simultaneously
• Budget and financial tracking experience
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking proficiency
• Ability to network, work, and communicate with diverse groups, including community members, private sector, fishers, land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, marine recreational businesses, and the general public, to learn the dynamics between the various marine conservation practitioners
• Evidence of ability to develop creative ideas to improve conservation strategies
• Proficient in common software applications, Microsoft Office, Web browsers
• Access to a vehicle, computer, printer and internet service

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working in a professional capacity in Hawai’i for at least 5 years
• Political acumen and familiarity with local political systems and players
• Familiarity with green building practices and wastewater systems
• Knowledge of Hawai’i tourism landscape, particularly the accommodations sector and marine recreation businesses
• LEED Accredited Professional

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The HFR may work in variable weather conditions, at remote outdoor locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, coastal and marine environments and vessels, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:

• Require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• Require snorkeling proficiency, lifeguard certification, and/or SCUBA certification
• Present frequent possibility of injury
• Require working independently from a home office setting
• Require travel to remote island areas, neighboring and other Pacific islands, as well as CORAL’s other project sites and international headquarters
