Position Title: California & Western States Program Assistant (Intern)

Location: Oakland, California

Hours and Compensation: This is a full-time, benefits-eligible internship position, lasting from January 5, 2015 through September 30, 2015. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is the equivalent of $15 per hour.

Description: The California and Western States Program Assistant will help the California and Western States office organize and communicate support for strong climate, clean energy, and clean vehicles policies. In particular, the Program Assistant will help organize support from key audiences, coordinate events that educate policymakers on UCS issues, and aid in other outreach activities.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 9-month paid internship position.

Responsibilities:

•  Manage planning of events that connect UCS experts with policy makers;

•  Support organizing of scientists, other experts, activists, and coalition partners in California and other western states;

•  Assist with online communications to UCS citizen and science networks;

•  Assist with drafting of letters, fact sheets, talking points, letters-to-the-editor, website content, emails, and other communications;

•  Support office in handling day-to-day projects and activities based on urgency, such as background research, responding to inquiries, or attending meetings and events;

•  Track outreach activities and help maintain databases and distribution lists.

Qualifications: Candidates must have strong demonstrated organizational skills as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. Must have the ability to be flexible to respond to fast-changing campaign needs; ability to write for and speak to lay audiences; and ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required. Some understanding of database maintenance, web management and on-line organizing tools is preferred. Strong candidates will have a proven track record of taking initiative and being comfortable managing projects. Campaign experience is a plus. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
