Position Title: Policy officer (temporary)

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Hours and Compensation: Part time (50%) until end of June 2015 (with a possible extension)

Description: Reports to: Director of European Policy and Government Relations

Position Objective: The Policy Officer’s role is to support the WCS Director of European Policy in promoting WCS conservation policy objectives and assisting with administrative tasks. The post will be based in the WCS Brussels office and will require close coordination with WCS Europe in London and WCS’s programme development and international policy departments based in New York.

Responsibilities: Policy: working with the Director of European Policy and the Vice President for International Policy to:
• Prepare briefings related to policies relevant to WCS Brussels office activities;
• Support the WCS International Policy programme, particularly the Director of European Policy, in advocating WCS policies to
relevant individuals and organizations;
• Help to create effective communication with key partners and others, and help develop and extend working relationships to
inform policy makers of WCS’ work;
• Undertake any necessary administrative duties to ensure the  smooth running of the office; and
• Assist with the management and organization of events and meetings as required.

Qualifications:

• A Degree, preferably to Masters level and in a field relevant to  wildlife conservation
•  Excellent oral and written communication skills
•  Fluency in English required; fluency in  German, French or any  other European languages would be an asset
•  Ability to engage effectively with others in policy
•  Experience of using new digital media, creation of web based content and social media would be an asset
•  Relevant qualification or experience in organizing meetings and ensuring follow-up
•  Knowledge of biodiversity policies or another policy area relevant to this post
•  Commitment to conservation
•  Experience of, and evidence of successfully working with, decision-makers, parliamentary and civil service contacts
•  In-depth knowledge of current affairs where appropriate
•  Confident and personable in character
•  Computer literate
•  Willingness to work flexible hours
