Description: Media Matters for America — a progressive, Washington, D.C-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a Climate and Energy Program Director. This position is based in our Washington, D.C., office. Applicants must be prepared to relocate if not living within commuting distance of downtown D.C.
Responsibilities:
- Content Generation:The Climate and Energy Program Director generates ideas for content on media coverage of environmental issues — everything from correcting poor reporting to criticizing lack of reporting — as well as approves or rejects pitches for content from the other two Climate and Energy Researchers. S/he either researches and writes these blogs/items or assigns a Researcher to this task. The Director also oversees long-term projects studying media coverage quantitatively.
- Outreach:The Director conducts outreach with environmental groups and energy businesses that share our values, ensuring that these groups are aware of how Media Matters can help them and collaborating with them on research projects, actions, and conferences. The Director also represents Media Matters at conferences, at panels, and in approved interviews with the media to discuss our work.
- Management:The Director supervises two Researchers, assigning them work, developing and their talent, and approving requests for time off.
- Editing:The Director edits all work related to energy and environment issues, even when written by other teams. Editing entails not only checking for spelling, grammar and style but also ensuring that all content conveys a compelling message and maintains strict accuracy.
- Donor Relations:The Director aids our fundraising team by editing our grant reports and joining calls and meetings with donors.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4-8 years of experience in progressive politics or media, with at least a year focusing on environmental issues
- A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, History, Environmental Science or related disciplines
- Familiar with and interested in climate and energy issues, particularly federal policies related to these issues
- Strong contacts in the environmental community are preferred but not required
- Creative self-starter with a demonstrated penchant for taking initiative
- Ability to plan and manage long-term projects under a deadline
- Ability to quickly research and write grammatical, accurate and compelling stories
- Experience pitching ideas for online or print content is preferred but not required
- Management experience preferred, but not required
- Technology
- Computer-savvy individual who is able to pick up new technology quickly
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel
- Experience creating charts, videos and graphics is helpful but not required
