Description: World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Program Officer at our Washington, DC office. Under the supervision of Director, Species Conservation the Program Officer for Anti-poaching and Protected Area Management will be responsible for leading on the technical aspects of the Zero Poaching project, focusing on developing US leverage and partnerships.

Responsibilities: Project Leader: Leads, manages and provides overall direction to the Zero Poaching project. Responsible, in partnership with the Signature Program Facilitator, for the development and management of project work plans and budgets, as well as the successful implementation of the project. Leads on donor reporting and smaller grant development. Reviews the performance outcomes and status of all activities and evaluates and reports these results, as well as recommendations for corrective action.

Specifically:

• Facilitate the development of an anti-poaching framework;
• Develop anti-poaching indicators;
• Facilitate a network of regional enforcement experts;
• Support and track the WWF uptake of SMART;
• Develop innovative and scalable tools to incentivize improved anti-poaching;
• Develop an approach to improve ranger employment and welfare conditions;
• Form partnerships with US academic institutions on anti-poaching issues;
• Enhance linkages between technology and anti-poaching;
• Support the development, management and adoption of the Conservation Assured approach to protected area management.

Communications: Keeps abreast of the scientific literature, species conservation policies and conservation issues. Reviews publications and public material, including the website and donor/membership materials. Serves as a WWF spokesperson in media interviews, promotional events and in public fora.

Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree is required in a related field is preferred, such as natural resources management, protected area management, conservation criminology, or conservation policy.
• Position requires at least four years of experience in anti-poaching, protected area management or criminology, or policing and an understanding of international conservation issues.
• Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising, budgeting, and monitoring donor compliance.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Strong project management skills.
• Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, to meet deadlines and commitments.
• Ability to work on initiatives with multiple and competing priorities.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively as a team member with a wide range of individuals, possibly across cultures and time zones.
