Position Title: National Wolf Campaign Director

Hours and Compensation: 6-month period (temprorary); $10,000

Description: The Wolf Campaign Director will implement the Endangered Species Coalition’s national wolf campaign and will be responsible for overseeing ESC’s wolf campaign field organizers and interns across the country. He/she will also engage the Coalition’s member organizations, partners, activists, and volunteers in the campaign’s events and activities. The Wolf Campaign Director will act as ESC’s primary liaison with campaign partners, and will coordinate related activities focused on the Endangered Species Act. Campaign activities include formulating strategies and corresponding plans, grassroots and grasstops organizing, public education, media relations, and fundraising.
We are looking for a creative thinker and self-starter who is organized, highly motivated, and can work independently. Good judgement is a must, and a sense of humor is a plus.
Responsibilities: Your supervisory responsibilities include overseeing and evaluating wolf campaign staff.
- You will build relationships with key policy and community leaders in the environmental community and serve as ESC’s liaison to these experts.
- You will support field staff by informing them—through emails, staff calls, news articles, etc—about ongoing political developments relating to the Wolf Campaign.
- You will build relationships with key congressional staff and congressional members focusing on issues important to ESC and our member groups.
- You will research grassroots campaign opportunities that do not center on federal legislation; examples include corporate practices, individual habitats and species protections, trade association policies, state-level legislation, municipal resolutions, etc.
- You will implement ESC’s national-level campaign strategies.
- You will serve as the point of contact and supervisor for wolf volunteers and assign them to appropriate projects (e.g., signature gathering, tabling, generating event turn-out, etc.).
- You will work with ESC staff and tech consultants to implement online campaigns and development strategies.
Qualifications: Work Experience: Three or more years’ experience in advocacy campaigning, preferably with experience in grassroots organizing. Wildlife conservation experience a plus. Experience leading campaigns, meeting with decision makers, and working with coalitions, members, activists, and volunteers.
Skills: Excellent oral and written communications skills. Strong interpersonal skills, strong facilitator skills, and demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills. Good time-management, personal organization, and prioritization skills. Very high comfort level speaking on the phone and effectively communicating by email.
Capabilities: Ability to build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with individuals from diverse organizations and with a range of perspectives. Ability to negotiate in sensitive situations, to handle sensitive information, and to elicit trust from individuals and organizations. Ability to work independently and multitask in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to make decisions. Strong willingness and ability to assume diverse responsibilities and roles in the context of a small nonprofit organization. Ability to think strategically and use good judgment. Some travel required.
Knowledge:Familiar with legislative process, particularly with environmental laws. Experience with/knowledge of endangered species protections a plus.
Education and Experience Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental science, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute.
