Hours and Compensation: Full time; Salary commensurate with experience, but starting at $35,000 with health care, retirement, sick leave, and paid vacation benefits.

Description: The Connecticut River Watershed Council, the principal citizen voice for the entire 4-state watershed since 1952, is looking for a dynamic and talented advocate to run our programs in the state of Connecticut’s portion of the watershed.

The Council’s 10-person staff works hard out of four offices on a wide variety of educational, advocacy, restoration, and water quality projects throughout the 11,000 square mile watershed. We love our work which includes song concerts, creating original artwork and literature with school kids, taking down dams, planting trees, making sure development is done right, fixing environmental problems, collecting high quality environmental data, building partnerships, spending time exploring our river, organizing thousands of volunteers to clean up trash along our rivers, responding to questions about the river and our watershed, and ensuring we meet the public’s high standards for the quality of life and environment in their watershed. Our work informs our vision of ecological and economic abundance.

Responsibilities: Working in coordination with the other program, outreach, administrative, and development staff this position is responsible for leading the Council’s work in the Connecticut portion of the watershed. This includes developing outreach events; educational programs; initiating aquatic and riparian restoration projects; advocating for Council positions at the local, state, and federal level; and engaging a wide spectrum of the public about their interests, passions, concerns, and aspirations for their water.

Qualifications: This is a demanding position in a hardworking organization that has high expectations for its work on behalf of the public. To wit, the successful applicant will demonstrate that they:

• Are tenacious, personable, adaptable, and able to conceive and implement effective advocacy strategy
• Have raised funds through individuals, foundations, or government sources
• Can communicate complicated, technical information clearly and concisely so that it is understandable by the general public, verbally and in writing
• Effectively manage projects that involve subcontractors, volunteers, and government agencies
• Know their way around state and federal environmental statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits Are able collaborators who can build teams and coalitions that improve outcomes for all participants Can work successfully in a one-person
