Position Title: Intern, Environment and Gender Index (EGI) – Global Gender Office

Location: Washington, DC

Description: IUCN—International Union for Conservation of Nature—helps find pragmatic solutions to the world’s most pressing environment and development challenges. With a strong gender policy that mandates a gender-sensitive approach to all the programmes and projects Union-wide and throughout partnerships, IUCN is a unique example of a technical environmental institution that champions women’s empowerment and advancing gender equality as intrinsic to meeting its goals. The Global Gender Office (GGO) contributes toward IUCN’s vision and mission by providing innovative approaches, technical support, policy development and capacity building to Government and non-Government members, IUCN programmes and offices, and to a wide range of partners around the world.

The incumbent will support a team led by the Global Senior Gender Advisor, several senior officers, program specialists and financial/administrative support staff. The GGO is based in Washington, DC. The working languages of the office are English and Spanish.

In 2013, IUCN launched the first global measurement system on gender and environment variables—the Environment and Gender Index (EGI), the pilot phase of which ranked 72 countries across 27 indicators. New databases will be developed and analyzed in the next phase of the EGI. IUCN is offering an internship for a graduate student or recent Master’s graduate to undertake research projects, analysis, and writing for the EGI initiative.

Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of national policy frameworks on gender and environment in developed and developing countries
  • Creation of global data set on gender considerations in national-level policies in sectors such as agriculture, forestry, water, fisheries, and energy
  • Creation of global set on the existence of a gender focal point system within environmental ministries and/or agencies
  • Gender analysis of country reports to international environmental conventions
  • Draft summary documents and other communications for the EGI initiative
  • Participate in local and international meetings as needed

 

Qualifications:

The required qualifications are:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as gender, sustainable development, environment, climate change, and/or the social sciences.
  • Experience or keen interest in the field of gender and environment.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Excellent teamwork, coordination, and time management skills.
  • Ability to rapidly research, analyze and integrate diverse information from varied sources.

The additional preferred qualifications are:

  • Current graduate student or recent Master’s graduate in relevant discipline preferred.
  • Experience in data analysis, monitoring and evaluation, or research methods.
  • Technical knowledge of energy, agriculture, or other sectors in the sustainable development sector.
  • Reading or writing ability in French and/or Spanish.
  • Experience working in developing countries.
