Description: The Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) has a mission to educate and activate high school students to strengthen and sustain the climate movement. Since 2008, ACE has educated 1.8 million high school students nationwide, and empowered over 300,000 youth to take action in their personal lives, in their schools and as leaders in the broader community.

ACE is at an exciting point in its development: In 2014 we increased revenue by 60%, brought on three new board members, and refined our programmatic strategy. We are poised to move from startup phase into expansion, and seek a dynamic operations and finance professional to serve as our Operations Director. This position will lead the execution of finance, budgeting, human resources and administration needs for ACE.

ACE accomplishes its mission through two program areas. ACE’s Education Program includes delivering the award-winning ACE Assembly to high school students. The ACE Assembly combines climate science with cutting-edge animation and storytelling to create an in-person experience that educates and inspires. ACE’s Action Program includes mentoring high school Action Fellows and leading workshops where students develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate in lasting climate solutions. ACE also supports high school teachers to master climate and energy science standards through best-in-class resources and professional development opportunities.

ACE is data-centric and tech-savvy, nimble and creative, passionate and results-oriented. ACE has a current staff of 20, an annual budget of $1.8 million, and maintains local programs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Reno, New York City, Raleigh & Charlotte North Carolina, and the San Francisco Bay Area. This position will work closely with ACE’s Executive Director in Boulder, Colorado.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include directing the administrative, finance and operational functions of the organization. These duties will include:

  • Finance and accounting: Work with Executive Director, leadership team and consultants to manage expenses, keep books up to date, prepare budgets, manage reporting for grants, and manage accounting policies and systems.
  • Strategic planning:Work with Executive Director and leadership team to develop strategy for effective use of organizational resources, create expense projections based on strategic decisions, and adaptively manage strategy to align with fundraising and programmatic needs.
  • Administration and governance: Work with Executive Director and leadership team to implement the policies and systems to effectively run the organization.
  • Human resources:Manage policies, procedures and services for administering benefits, handling insurance, recruiting, hiring and staffing.
  • Information technology: Work with IT consultants to configure and implement backend functions to support smooth and efficient operations, with a focus on making ACE a primarily paperless organization.

Description:

Experience recruiting, hiring and retaining diverse, talented staff

  • Experience managing the finance and administration of a $2+ million organization or business unit; nonprofit experience preferred
  • Minimum of a BA; MBA, CPA or related degree desired
  • Minimum five years experience in a management role ideally with broad financial and operations management experience
  • Experience as an employee or board member of a nonprofit organization; must be familiar with nonprofit finance and accounting regulations and experience with grant management
  • Proven track record facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization
  • Ability to train and manage staff to use finance systems
  • Tech-savvy with experience selecting and managing relationships with software and technology vendors
  • Excellent management and leadership skills with proven ability to engage direct and indirect reports and peers
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical and strategic thinker
  • Passion for the organization’s mission
