Position Title: Pollution Prevention & Climate Change Program Intern
Location: New York City, New York
Dates and compensation: Rotational, typically 3-12 months, corresponding with, but not limited to, academic cycle.; Unpaid/Volunteer. College credit available.
Description: The intern will work with the P2C2 program office in New York on an Urban Toxics Mitigation and Reduction project. This project focuses on the greening of small businesses located in areas threatened by extreme weather events (e.g., flooding), through a combination of better management practices (e.g., inventory control, storage) and process modifications (e.g., substitution of raw material inputs by safer alternatives).
This internship offers the opportunity to gain experience with EPA’s partnership programs and related Region 2 initiatives, while interacting with EPA staff, representatives from states, and non-governmental organizations. The intern might receive training in tools for program implementation, evaluation, and promotion, including, but not limited to:
- Business and Government Sector Outreach
- Pollution prevention methods and metrics; and,
- GIS data manipulation and analysis.
Qualifications: Candidates working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering (e.g., environmental, chemical, mechanical) are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should be able to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of people;
- Computer literate (i.e., word-processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software);
- Balance multiple tasks;
- Independently research small business logistics and operations, analyze data, and produce for team review a set of technical bulletins focused on reduction of toxic chemicals in small business operations.
- Interact collaboratively as part of a team to accomplish specific goals; and,
- Analyze manufacturing production processes, and identify potential optimization/pollution prevention opportunities (e.g., green chemistry/engineering, supply change management).

Employment Requirements: The ideal candidate would be nearing the completion of his or her academic studies, graduate or undergraduate, as stated above under “Qualifications”. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible for this program. Below is a list of requirements for the Internship Program:
- Employment is voluntary, based on a for-credit or other curriculum requirement.
- Length of service is a minimum of 3 months.
- Although U.S. citizenship is not required, non-U.S. citizens must be students who are lawfully admitted for either permanent residence or on a current student visa.
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
