Description: Mekong Energy and Ecology Network (MEE Net) addresses the emerging nexus of social and environmental problems arising from the rapid growth of the electricity sector in the Mekong and wider SE Asian region. Our regional network includes over 40 organizations throughout Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

MEE Net is searching for a self-motivated individual to join our Bangkok team in the position of Information Officer. We are looking for someone who combines the roles of researcher and activist. As part of the MEE Net Coordinating Team, you will participate fully in all aspects of the organization, including events and workshops organizing, partners outreach, research and project planning.

  • Location: based in office in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Travel Opportunities: The position will involve regional travel within the Mekong countries.
  • Commitment: We are looking for candidates who can commit to the position for the period of 1-2 years.

Responsibilities:

The Information Officer will contribute to MEE Net’s programmatic work, in tandem with our local partners in SE Asia. This position will have broad freedom to develop and implement projects with partners. In line with this, the Officer will research and monitor issues on the electricity sector in the Mekong region, based on MEE Net’s three regional themes.

Additionally, the Officer will develop information-sharing processes between MEE Net and our partners, ensuring that knowledge flows within our network, via our website and other various channels. MEE Net is also launching a Salween Commons website to act as a repository for data stemming from Salween River research and three major Salween Studies conferences. Coordinating with the MEE Net network will be a large part of the role.

The Officer will also oversee MEE Net’s public presence and communications, including drafting position papers, maintaining the organization’s website and editing reports. An important part of the job will be maintaining communications with our donors and funders.

Since we are a small office, we want someone who can dive into all aspects of the organization. As part of the MEE Net Coordinating Team, the Officer will contribute to a range of varied activities, including organizing research programs, events and workshops. The role will also provide logistical support for programs and events, including budgeting and travel planning. The position also involves some administrative and office tasks, including light phone duties.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field related to energy, development studies, or the environment, or relevant work experience in a similar field.
  • Fluency in English is required, both spoken and written
  • Strong interest, understanding and passion for environmental issues are required. Ideally we want someone who is part researcher, part activist.

  • Ability to work closely on a team
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on whatever tasks are needed on hand
  • Excellent intercultural communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – especially Word and Excel
  • Given a willingness to learn, technical knowledge of or background in electricity is not strictly required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in international development work, the NGO sector, an energy-related field or research in the Mekong region
