Description: The Government Relations team at The Wilderness Society (TWS) is seeking highly motivated individuals to join us for our spring internship session. Our team is dedicated and passionate about protecting wild places across the US. We are responsible for the public advocacy of TWS’s agenda. Our priority campaigns include work on wilderness designation, conservation funding, and responsible energy development on public lands. The GR team manages legislative and regulatory strategy, issue positioning, Executive Branch and Congressional outreach and education, appropriations matters, strategic communications, and builds grassroots support for the protection and management of public lands. This spring promises to be an exciting and busy time for TWS as the 114th Congress is sworn in and new legislation is introduced.
The Government Relations team offers unpaid internships to students enrolled in an accredited education institution, who wish to gain firsthand experience working closely with dedicated staff on public lands issues
Responsibilities:
- Review reports and pending legislation, attend Congressional hearings and mark-ups and participate in other meetings and events relevant to TWS mission and work
- Conduct research and prepare blogs, letters, fact sheets, and other written materials on legislation and administrative policies, and deliver materials to Congressional and administration staff
- Track legislation from introduction to passage, including summarizing content and maintain target database and policy information and occasionally attending lobby meetings
- Engage in coalition activities with partners, including attending coalition meetings, helping with lobby days and trainings, calling activists and like-minded organizations
- Perform general administrative duties in support of assigned project work.
Requirements
- Must be enrolled in an educational institution with courses leading to the attainment of a degree, certification, or diploma.
- Demonstrated desire to learn about and work on public land issues.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; Access database and GIS experience a plus.
- Must be a team player and willing to work in a collaborative environment.
- Willingness to adapt and remain flexible as projects and priorities change.
- Self-motivated, passionate, and professional.
- Most of all – willingness to have fun while producing great work!
