Description: ClimateWorks is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Associate to provide research and analytical support to ClimateWorks and its partners. Under the direction of the Director, Advisory & Research, the Associate will design and manage complex analytical assignments and provide additional project management and communications support. This position will work on projects of both national and international scope. (S)he will support the Foundation’s rigorous quantitative evaluation of carbon mitigation opportunities with a variety of tools. As such, the Associate will be deeply familiar with the Foundation’s quantitative models and analytical approaches and will provide synthesis of the latest trends and news in the energy, climate, and policy field.

The Associate will work in a challenging environment that requires detail-oriented, independent work, quick thinking, and professional interactions. Due to the nature of the work, the Associate must be comfortable managing a varying work load that can be, at times, both heavy and time-sensitive. The ideal candidate will have exceptional quantitative skills, a proven interest in climate change research, excellent written and oral communication skills, a solid understanding of issues related to public policy and economics, and experience working with clients or other high-level external stakeholders.

Responsibilities: The Associate, Advisory & Research, will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Work to design and scope topics on climate, energy, and policy that affect ClimateWorks’ strategies. This includes synthesis and evaluation of the latest trends and news in the energy, policy, and climate change fields. Communicate and synthesize the above information in written reports, infographics, and presentations for ClimateWorks and partners, as requested.
  • Support the Advisory & Research team efforts in estimating, tracking, and reporting on progress toward ClimateWorks’ quantitative GHG reduction targets and other outcome metrics related to decarbonization. This includes the use of analytical tool kits and in-house models to track program team goals and progress towards goals and use of new analytical tools to quantify technological, economic, and social impacts from policies.
  • Provide analysis of existing datasets and mitigation opportunities on topics such as national policies, cities, global supply chains, energy access, etc., and when appropriate, prepare background briefs and presentation material in preparation for senior management discussions, conferences, and decision-making meetings as requested.
  • Serve as the liaison to internal communication requests on datasets, reports, synthesis of analysis, etc.
  • Assist in the writing, editing, and management of select ClimateWorks communication materials.
  • Assist in the scheduling, logistics, and note-taking for meetings, conference calls, and workshops.
  • Serve as the liaison to ClimateWorks’ Programs team to provide regular updates, briefings, new reports, and presentations on relevant topics.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) with coursework in either data science, finance, economics, or public policy
  • At least 1-2 years of experience post-degree in analytical work, through an array of diverse positions (i.e., in academia, private sector, or nonprofit sector)
  • Proven ability to produce clear analytical notes and reports on complex issues, as well as quality applied research
  • Exceptional writing, editing, communications, and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet modeling, superior MS Excel skills, experience with other statistical software tools and data visualization platforms desirable
  • Ability to create well designed graphics and presentation material preferred
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to reach out to different organizations within the ClimateWorks network and to interact with a diversity of individuals at external organizations
  • Ability to juggle numerous competing demands and priorities and respond quickly to management requests
  • International experience, especially in China, valuable
