Description: The Academic Sustainability Coordinator will serve as the primary staff assistant to the Director of the WSU Center for Sustainability Practices and Research. S/he will work to advance the mission of the Center which is to inform and educate WSU students, faculty, staff and the local and statewide community in order to ensure the sustainability of our region and our world for future generations. S/he will work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders both on and off campus to plan, develop, implement and evaluate a variety of sustainability-related events, projects and programs.

The individual in this position will spend a significant amount of time managing and implementing the annual Intermountain Sustainability Summit www.intermountainsustainabilitysummit.com. A love for special event management, excellent customer service skills, enthusiasm, and the ability to build relationships with internal and external partners is a must.

Responsibilities:

– Manage all logistics involved in successfully hosting the annual Intermountain Sustainability Summit at WSU with the advice and input from the ISS volunteer planning committee.

– Work with the Energy & Sustainability Office to make progress on the goals outlined in the academic, engagement, and planning/administration sections of the nationally recognized Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS).

– Provide faculty support for sustainability course development and sustainability-related research.

– Prepare and manage budgets and pursue grant/development opportunities.

– Collaborate with a variety of on and off campus entities to host sustainability-related guest speakers, workshops, and events.

– Facilitate community-based projects which provide opportunities for faculty-student collaboration across disciplines through applied research and consulting with private, public, and non-profit community partners (e.g. launch a community solar program).

– Work with the University Sustainability Coordinator to maintain WSU’s sustainability website, social media sites, newsletters, brochures, and other promotional materials.

– Work with the University Sustainability Coordinator to build involvement in sustainability initiatives for the University among students, employees, supervisors, management, and representatives from other campuses in the region.

– Work with the University Sustainability Coordinator to foster organizational and individual behavior change for enhanced sustainability using social marketing and other effective, efficient methodologies.

Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or studies, environmental policy, business or public administration, urban planning or a related field. An Assoicates degree with 6 years of specific experience with sustainability could be accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.

Seeking applicants with:

Excellent communication skills, including but not limited to technical writing, public speaking, and oral presentation.

Website and social media content creation and management.

Finance/Budget preparation and management skills.

Preferred Qualifications include:

Course work in environmental science or studies, environmental policy, business or public administration, urban planning or a related field.

Strong organizational, analytical, and research skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Excellent marketing and promotion skills.

Three or more years of work experience creating and implementing sustainability projects, programs, or events.

One year or more of experience managing staff or volunteers.

One year or more of experience with budget preparation and management.

Grant writing and development experience.

Creative and collaborative problem solving skills.
