Position Title: Graduate Research Intern, Natural Gas Accountability & Compliance Initiative
Location: Position is based in EDF’s San Francisco, CA office. Strong candidates who would like to work from our Austin, TX office will also be considered.
Dates and compensation: Three to six months. The exact term will be agreed upon with the selected candidate.; The position can be full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (hours negotiable) depending on the selected candidate’s other academic and professional commitments.; Compensation is up to $20/per hour for this position dependent on qualifications and experience.

Our internships typically run for 12 weeks during the summer, fellowships between one to two years. This Graduate Research Intern will support the development of a new initiative within EDF’s Natural Gas Program focused on reducing the environmental impacts from natural gas development – impacts to air, water, the climate, and communities – by increasing the level of accountability among industry and regulators. This intern will conduct high-level, focused research, perform data analyses, and develop comprehensive supporting documentation.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting literature reviews and research on topics such as gas industry environmental performance practices, reporting, and compliance; state regulatory agency enforcement practices; and the environmental impacts associated with natural gas development.
- Identify and collect data sets from diverse sources, and perform qualitative and quantitative analyses.
- Prepare written documentation including memos, presentations, factsheets, etc.
- Provide as-needed support to the project director.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest in data analysis and the intersection of environmental science, policy and industry behavior. Knowledge of energy issues preferred.
- Substantial hands-on experience with Excel. Some experience or familiarity with other software tools for data analysis, management and visualization preferred (e.g. R, ArcGIS, SAS, databases).
- Highly proficient in all Microsoft office applications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must be well organized, self-motivated, intellectually curious and detail-oriented.
- Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated initiative and problem solving skills.
- Ideal candidates will be current or recent graduate students of a relevant Master’s program.
